Opinions on LMT vs. POF .308

Hi, I have narrowed my options to the LMT and the POF. I am going to be using this rifle for med/long range shooting - hopefully out to 500-800 yards once I get a LOT of practice. I have read many threads about these guns and have narrowed it down to the above two. I have a few questions, and any information would be appreciated. First, my biggest concern is the length difference between the two barrels. Is there a large difference in accuracy at longer distances between the 20" POF barrel and the 16" LMT barrel? I assume there would be, but people say no. If this is true, then why do they make a 20" barrel. Is this barrel length going to be a big problem? I have heard that the difference between a 16" and a 20" barrel is negligible, but it doesn't make sense to me. Second, I have heard mention that some people don't like the rails on the POF, although I am not quite sure why. Some enlightenment would help. Third, I told 2 friends that shoot rifles that I was looking into purchasing a 308. They both independently recommended the LMT. One of them also advised me against buying the POF - although I have heard good things about them on this site. I have never heard anything bad about the LMT. Fourth, I have heard good things about the LMT trigger as well as the POF. Fifth, if I do decide to buy the LMT (I am leaning towards it, and will probably buy it on gunbroker), is there anything that I should specifically look for or avoid, ie. a newer production run, the steel flat mat (MWSF) vs. the chrome lined (MWSE), etc. Finally, anything else that anyone thinks that I should know to help me make up my mind. Any and all information would be helpful. BTW, none of the gun stores in my area have either of these two guns, so I can't handle either one of them prior to purchase. Thanks.

Re: Opinions on LMT vs. POF .308

Well first of all you know that youre comparing two different gas systems (Direct gas and Piston).

Different recoil characteristics between the two. I haven't shot the LMT yet but have shot the POF P308 with its 20" barrel and it shoots very well.

With regards to the barrel length (16" Vs 20") you'll have slightly higher velocity with the 20" and thats it. Accuracy, or the ability of the barrel (or rifle) to shoot precisely has nothing to do with barrel length.

I have seen targets of the LMT MWS with its chrome lined bore 16" and they looked good. Aside from that I can't really comment but I wouldn't mind the LMT.

Re: Opinions on LMT vs. POF .308

The 20" POF is a little off balance. I'd go 18". The rails seem a little bigger but I like them. My pick would be POF. Having held both but only owning a POF in 5.56, I just like the overall feel of the POF. Just my opinion... FWIW.

Re: Opinions on LMT vs. POF .308

I have handled both. I am not a fan of the POF rail system. Their early models have been prone to various reliability problems too. The LMT, besides weight, is nearly flawless.

Re: Opinions on LMT vs. POF .308

I was in your shoes a few months ago and was trying to choose between these two fine rifles. I found several POFs locally and got to handle them but no LMTs were to be found. I like the feel and weight of the POF but in the end the ability to change out the barrel and the "monolithic" one piece upper and rail won me over. As to barrel the owner of the board chimed in on one thread and said that the 16" POF was an honest 800 yard moa rifle that was capable of shooting to 1000 yards, (I'm paraphrasing). After spending time with my LMT I believe it capable of the same. I'm not a fan of piston guns so that did not factor in to my decision. My best two loads so far are M118LR and Priv Partizan 168g Match. With both loads I can get four shots in one ragged hole with one outside but still sub moa. After three boxes of each load I think it is the fiddler and not the fiddle causing the flyer. Thus far I've tried five handloads three of which were sub MOA. Five factory target loads, three of which were sub, moa. Three Military surplus loads none of which were sub moa. Groups were the average of three five shot groups at 100 yards. I have shot steel IPSC targets out to 800 yards with the LMT and it is capable at this range with M118LR. When I got mine I was quoted 10 weeks from LMT so I looked to gunbroker at picked one up for $2,275.00 NIB. Hope this helps.

Re: Opinions on LMT vs. POF .308

LMT all the way. The Chrome lined barrel is capable of sub-moa accuracy, you can change barrels quickly, and its just bad as fuck.

I got mine for $2,274.99 shipped and it is worth every penny. 700 yards is no problem with this rifle, and Im not even a master handloader. I would have shot mine further but thats as far as my range goes.

Now do the right thing and buy the LMT!

Re: Opinions on LMT vs. POF .308

Sorry, been crazy at work. Haven't slept much. Thank you to everyone for your input. I think that I am going to purchase the LMT. Are there any significant differences between the chrome lined rifle (WSE) vs. the stainless steel rifle (WSF)? Any other "options" I should look at? Thanks.

BTW, in response to an earlier message, I live in El Paso, TX. I will fix my location.

Re: Opinions on LMT vs. POF .308

You can't go wrong with the LMT. 16" CL barrel will produce .75moa 5 shot groups easy with 150 SSTs and I've got .6moa groups using 175smk and 178AMAX loaded to mag length. No idea on the SS barrels, but I'd expect them to be .5moa shooters.

Re: Opinions on LMT vs. POF .308

Having not fired an LMT, my vote is for the POF. I now own my second P308 20" and it has the HSR (hunter/sniper rail). It fits the hands absolutely perfect and in no way, shape, or form compares to the previous Predator MRR (modular rail receiver) that was rather bulky.

The only semi-auto platform that I would've considered had it been available at the time I bought my POF would be a GAP-10.

Re: Opinions on LMT vs. POF .308

while i am sure the POF is a great rifle, hell GA precision builds off their platform, that handguard they used is atrocious. just got an LMT and really like the feel of it, going to get it to the range in the next week or two

Re: Opinions on LMT vs. POF .308

I've got the LMT with a 16" CL and a 20" SS. They are both very accurate barrels with the edge going to the 20". The 16" shoots about 150fps slower than the 16".

I handled the POF but didn't shoot it. I'm not sold on the need for the piston guns and am concerned about parts down the road. The Brits adopting the LMT was a big plus in my decision making process. It should help ensure a better level of support over the long haul. IMHO

Re: Opinions on LMT vs. POF .308

Plus 1+++ for the LMT 308. I got my LMT from STG firearms in Prescott AZ. They do a lot of business on GunBroker they have good prices and they dont charge the additional 3% for using credit cards.

I only noticed because the prices quoted in the thread didn't seem quite right.
