I'm getting ready to order the Weaver Grand Slam from Midway. This will be going on my not yet ordered SPS Tac, VTR 5R, LTR, or similar in 308. I just want to make sure I'm ordering everything I need. The Weaver is all that my budget will allow at this time.

EGW 1 piece picatinny 20 MOA base for remington 700 short action
Butler Creek #26 and 13
Burris 30mm Xtreme picatinny rings in medium height
Nikon 4" sunshade 40mm objective
Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40

Thanks

First off. Welcome to the Hide.

Unless you are going to have an adjustable cheek piece on your stock then I would get the LOW rings to get better more consistent cheek weld.

Also, I just noticed that you are getting a Nikon sunshade for your Weaver scope. Just because they say 40mm on both does not mean they will work with each other. Just check to make sure they will properly attach with each other.

Otherwise it is a good starter setup.

Re: Opinions on optic setup

Thanks for the welcome. I followed your advice and ordered the low rings instead of the medium ones. I found out about the Nikon shade from the infamous Grand Slam originated by Lowlight. Someone in there mentioned that the Nikon is a perfect fit. I'll find out soon enough as I placed my order an hour ago.

Re: Opinions on optic setup

You might be able to use the low Burris Xtreme rings. I like my scope down as close to the barrel as I can get without touching. I have a EGW base and low Xtreme rings with 50mm scopes on two diff rifles. I have almost 1/4" between the bell and the barrel on both rifles. I dont know how to tell you how to measure for the correct height. When I ordered the base and rings for the first rifle last year, I was told I needed the high rings. when I put them on I had 3/4" between the barrel and the bell. No brainer, I sent them back and got the low Xtreme rings and still have room to spare. This year I ordered the EGW base again and the low Xtreme rings and the fit just right. The person I ordered from said it would not work. They fit perfectly.. The first scope was a 1" tube and the second was a 30mm tube. I think the Xtreme low rings and EGW base will mount up to a 50mm scope. I hope this might help you.. bshooter..
