Typically when people say "I've worked with the Special Forces (or SEALs, Rangers, SAS etc...)" that's code for I'm not a qualified guy, but I'm going to pretend I am..... </div></div>

How is That

B/c it happens all the time and many many people do it. For example there is a particular gun store that one owner claims he "flew for Delta Force" and the other owner says he is Special Forces. The "SF" guy is a support / non-qualified guy at 20th Group. And flying for 160th is not flying for delta force.

Being assigned to a unit is not the same as being a qualified member. But I will have the schoolhouse look up the individuals and see if they graduated the Q-course.

Yeah i understand that.
Who knows what this guy did, or if he was even a fighting force in Special Operations. Oh well, thats not the point. Seems like good training to me. Im sure theres better, but thats $$$

Re: Opsgear and the Urban Warfare Center

Marty Thomas, their director of training, is a SF qualified guy who served in 5th Group.
Nothing on John West yet. Notice Marty's wording is different that West's. I may be wrong and will certainly give the guy (West) credit if he's legit.

To me (and a LOT of other guys) being upfront and honest about your credentials does matter especially if you're running training and banking on those creds.

Re: Opsgear and the Urban Warfare Center

Just an FYI.
spec ops does have soldiers assigned to units who are not assigned to the unit per the dd-214.
they perform tasks which may include direct small unit action but are working directly for DOA, department of the army or DOD department of defense.
what this does, is it allows these soldiers to perform at the level of training of the spec ops soldiers, without having to go through the Army chain of command/logistics/company commander etc for very fast deployment.
It was copied from the israeli forces in the early eighties.
Most of these units recruited highly motivated "grunts" from infantry training, and merged them into a spec ops unit. some went through the Qcourse without being officially assigned to the 5th group, 7th group etc.
Some did not attend the Qcourse. they were trained in israel, by the israeli commandos or the SAS.
the problem is NONE of this will show on the DD-214.
You agree to kind of give up the paper glory to live the story glory....
Its part of the culture, flying under the radar, looking like an average 11B, or 11C on paper.
I dont know if it is still being done, but those are the undisputable facts that I was privy to.
