my current project is a Rem SPS-V in 308. i have some money becoming available soon and wanted to know peoples thought on next improvement. my two thoughts are a new scope or rebarreling and truing the action. my curent setup is the SPS-V with a B&C stock, Timney trigger, Seekins rail and scope mounts with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 scope. the rifle shoots well now for a stocker. i will want to get both done but which should i address first? thanks.

I started with a SPS-V as well. After 1500-2000 rounds, it didn't shoot as well as I liked. It actually didn't shoot as well as I liked before that because of so many flyers. How well does yours still shoot?

Looks like your rifle has a nice setup. I'd rebarrel if I were you. I rebarreled mine and it met my expectations and then some. Keep in mind that when you rebarrel and true, you'll need a new bolt so keep that cost in mind.

I suppose all the tens of thousands of trued M700's using a trued OEM bolt were all done wrong.

The the OP;

Spend the money on reloading components and trigger time and squirrel some money away for a new barrel. Develop yourself so your rifle is the limiting factor. Then rebarrel/true, restock, etc... You'll know what you want by then and you won't have to ask.

What I know is that a new bolt fits better. The OEM bolt fits kinda loose in the stock receiver. When the receiver is opened up to .705", the fit is looser. My receiver was .702" and .703" and the new PTG bolt was .700". The difference in fit was night and day. The smith explained to me something about timing as well.

i currently have under 1200 rounds thru the rifle. i already handload. i just wanted to see if there was a rule of thumb for the progression of project builds. as in scope before barrel/action. thanks.

While a new PTG bolt is very nice, it's not required. Though it might not feel as good, having some bolt/receiver clearance is not a detriment to accuracy. As long as the boltface and lugs are square to the receiver, everything will be A-OK.
