Ordered a Garand through CMP

Re: Ordered a Garand through CMP

I got my Garand through CMP about 12 years ago. Paid around 375 dollars for it then. I have had a lot of fun with mine. Good shooting rifle, deadly on wild pigs. Don't think you will ever regret getting one.

Re: Ordered a Garand through CMP

I got one back in 2005. Somewhere around $450 or so IIRC.Provided you fill out the appropriate paperwork mine came within 4 weeks.

Mine is a SA, that was rebarreled in 1963-appeared unfired and had really nice wood with cartouches clearly visible.

I only put about 100 rounds through it. Great fun and a valuable part of our military history.

Re: Ordered a Garand through CMP

Not to hi-jack this thread but I am thinking of ordering a garand from the CMP also. MY question is what ammo are you going to shoot. I was told a while back that old M1 Garands cannot fire new 30 06 ammo. IS this correct?

You can get the ammo from CMP as well for a decent price. They now limit you to 10 cans per year.

Re: Ordered a Garand through CMP

Surplus ammo.....only.. there is some ammo being manufactured for the garand.. (it will say right on the box) There are some people that use lighter grain bullets, but that has been debated.. Im not chancing it... OR...you can put a gas plug in there and turn it down to the gun just functions and shoot regular ammo..

Cmp also sells the Greek surplus 30-06 for like 92 bucks for 192 rnd spam cans on the garand clips....

Re: Ordered a Garand through CMP

I got my CMP (then DCM) Garand in the early 80s, $112.70 delivered.

I got the M1 on Thursday, Friday I was suppose to fly to Hawaii to fire a High Power Match. I figured What to Heck, Left my M14 and took the Garand.

The first shot I fired out of it was the sighters at 200 yard standing. Didnt really do that bad for the first time I shot the garand in a match.

It may not shoot as good as my Super Match M1A, but I think its more fun to shoot.

Re: Ordered a Garand through CMP

Mine likes the Remington UMC ball if I don't have any surplus available to use. Its not too hot so you shouldn't have op-rod issues. I've been advised to stay away from American Eagle unless its the stuff they make specifically for the Garand. Their standard 150 gr ball is supposedly too hot for the Garand to handle unless you have an adjustable gas plug. Garands are a blast to shoot. I love mine!! Btw, buy all the enbloc clips you can find because they are harder and harder get.

Re: Ordered a Garand through CMP

I was advised to put a yellow "post it" on my form with any request I might have when I ordered my 1st Garand. I was told that if these good folks could comply that they would. First one I requested a WWII springfield rack grade. I got it. Second one was for nice wood and finish on a Service Grade HR. Got it. Springfield is an OK shooter. HR is outstanding.

Re: Ordered a Garand through CMP

Sorry to hijack the thread, but what is the procedure for ordering a garand through CMP? I dont know anyone who has done it and I'd be really interested in getting one as well. Thanks!!

Re: Ordered a Garand through CMP

Go to the CMP website, they will have all the information that you need. Or if you want drive to Anniston, Al and buy one from the store. Be warned though, you will spend hours looking for the perfect Garand. I live just outside of Anniston and my wife will not let me go to the CMP store anymore. Oh well, what she doesn't know won't kill her!

Re: Ordered a Garand through CMP

Yep, the CMP website will tell you all you need to know. Note that there is a shooting/marksmanship requirement which is, imho, all too easy to avoid. The whole idea of the CMP is to promote markmanship (which, I might add, is so sorely needed by a LOT of folks!!) and it s a great way to get into competitive shooting. Its exactly how I got started back in 2004...only wish I would have gotten the bug ealier as I wasted a lot of good shooting years!

Go shoot a local Garand match, or regular high power match, and I am sure about every one of the shooters there have bought an M1 from the CMP and can walk you right thru it....and you get to try high power...which is about the most fun you can have with your skivvies still on! :)

Re: Ordered a Garand through CMP

I bought one in 2005 and specifically requested a good shooter. They sent me a '53 SA Service Grade with a barrel made the same year. It has shot very well - 1.5 MOA (and better with handloads using 168 gr. SMKs and IMR 4064). Those made later were some of the highest quality because SA was bucking for the M14 contract.

The only problem mine had, which is not uncommon, is that it came with a loose gas cylinder. That will throw the front sight off on every shot. But it is easy to fix. There are plenty of instructions floating around for peening the splines on the barrel (without damaging it) to tighten up the connection. And, oh yes, the op-rod is intentionally bent. So don't worry if you strip the rifle down and see minor bends to it. But be careful what ammo you feed it. Hot rounds will damage the op-rod eventually. The CMP forums have a wealth of information.

Re: Ordered a Garand through CMP

I fixed my loose gas cylinder with right-angled shims made from (honest to gosh) beer can stock. Tighter 'n a Scotsman's purse. A little tricky to assemble, but it works fine and costs (roughly) nothing.

Got mine in the early '90's and paid somewhere around $225. SA September '41 (S/N 75XXX), Rack Grade with a '53 Win stamped barrel. Good looker, good shooter. Refinished the stock and bedded it according to the NRA Garand reprint's directions. Added N/M rear sight mods and a hooded front sight with inserts. There's that 1" black rubber block extender on the butt. So, I'm not a purist; so hang me. From my cold, dead hands, etc....

150gr, Rem brass, 50.0gr of IMR-4064; Yahoo...!

The "mixmasters" are the best - a testament to the production methods and interchangeability of parts among Garands. (Although you have to check headspace when trying out a different bolt).

The only "pure" Garand I ever saw that I wouldn't mind having was in the military museum at Ft. Harrison, MT. They have one that belonged to one of the First Special Services Forces guys and it has one of the pre-WWII gas trap receivers and looked to be all original. But it would be more for the history anyway. The big thrill was talking to Mark Radcliffe, one of officers who led the Devil's Brigade. I told him about seeing a plaque outside a city gate in Rome and he replied, "That was me who got conned into leading that patrol."
