Suppressors Ordered an Ultra 9, any reason for me to also order a 7?

I originally ordered an Ultra 7 CB, but after 2 months of silencershop saying it'll come in, and then calling today and them saying another 2 months I saw HansohnBrothers post about having them in stock and called. They are wonderful to work with and was really helpful.

My local FFL was not that great and with the $150 transfer fees, and them saying it takes about 1 month for them to do an FFL to FFL transfer for the NFA item, and they had both the 338 and Ultra 9 CB on the shelf, I just paid $1295 ($200 more than online) for their Ultra 9...

This leaves me wondering, am I going to also want an Ultra 7? I guess I'll be running the Ultra 9 on a 308 20", but if I get a 22" 6.5cm, then maybe I'll appreciate the 2 inches less -- probably an Ultra 7 CB 6.5 then. Wondering what people's first hand experience is.

Run them both and have no regrets.

They perform equally just different footprints.

I have an Ultra 9 and love it. I see no reason to get Ultra 7 when you can simply thread off one rifle and into another.

If I got something different it be a 30 cal (like omega or Saker etc etc) that’s rated for full auto Fire. Than you can run on AR rifles if you want etc without worrying about hurting your precision can. I have a 556 Saker coming, in hindsight prolly should have just went in the 30 cal model. But a shorter one would be nice for the AR

So in short if you want 2 suppressors at least have them for different purposes if you do choose to utilize them

It's really just a matter of financial situations. If I could afford it I'd have every quality can known to man . I can't afford it, so I currently own a 9" SAS Arbiter and have a TBAC 338 Ultra awaiting approval. I shoot magnums and buy cans accordingly, if I was better off than I am I'd have them all and buy rifles just to suit the suppressor.

Those are some enormous fees for a transfer. My dealer charges me zero for the transfer. They did do my prints and photos this time and charged me for those. $40 IIRC.

Thanks, it looks like I'll probably just get the Ultra 7 in 6.5 dedicated for the 6.5. Though it's less swappable that way. I have a Saker 556 for my AR, but I just can't stand how dirty the chamber/magazine gets with all that blowback, so it's been sitting in my safe unused for some time... I almost considered just buying a 223 bolt so I could have something pleasant to run my suppressor in

I started with a 7 and ended up getting a 9 as well. The 9 was just approved and I'll be testing side by side this weekend. I'll eventually pick up a 338 for super duper quiet.

The 7 does so well I have zero desire for a 9. I own two other 9" cans. That 2" makes more of a difference than you'd think, especially if you carry your rifle slung, muzzle down.

Or getting in/out of a side by side hunting hogs. The 7 is the perfect balance of length/weight/sound suppression. I have other 9" cans too and I completely agree with you.

For a dedicated hunting suppressor, is the 5’s handiness worth it over the 7 noise wise? Can you even tell a difference?

The 7 has been great for me. I just want a DT for my bolt action hunting rifle.

I've never owned a 5 but I've shot a demo at a match and seen others shooting them and there is a pretty significant difference between the 5 and 7. It seems like theres twice the difference in sound between the 5 and 7 vs the 7 and 9 if that makes any sense. I think any shorter than 7 and your first impression on hearing it is "damn that's kinda loud!" A 5 knocks the blast down but I wouldn't call them quiet. The 7 just seems to be right in the sweet spot.

It looks like my rifles will be the same overall length if I have a .308 20" with an ultra 9, and a 6.5 22" with an ultra 7... haha it looks like I'll end up just having 1 of every suppressor eventually...

That's exactly what I thought too when I heard the 5 for the first time... "Damn that's louder than I thought it'd be" no such thing as a free lunch though and 5" is short. The Ultra 7 is really the sweet spot in the lineup for a can that will get used on the line and out in the real world, be it hunting or on a truck gun, or whatever. The 9 is quieter to the ear than the 7, but not by all that much. On the other hand, the 7 is much quieter than the 5, at least to my ears.

Those 2 inches might matter to your old lady but it won’t make a difference. I would wait another year for the same can just a little shorter. Should have gone with the 7 in the first place if that was even a thought.

I have a 5, 7, and 9. The 7 is my favorite for mountain hunting with shorter barrel 308. Nice and compact. I like the 9 for bench shooting, Bipods, etc. Honestly, I really can't find an application for the 5 and have thought about getting rid of it. It's really cool to look at on short weapons, but it's got a pretty nice crack to it where I don't like going no ear pro. So for me I would just grab my 7 instead which is hardly any weight increase (and what's 2"??) and not have to wear ears most of the time. So the 5 for me just doesn't have an application. I'm sure someone else might have one, but it doesn't fit my shooting needs.

Well I'm stuck with a 9 for now... though Silencershop is now taking their time reviewing the form 4... still waiting for my e-signatures so they can actually submit it.

Sadly, I don't think it'll make it here by next July's Alaska precision rifle training class. I think I found a dealer around here willing to do transfers for only $50, and not give me a bunch of bullshit, and then order it from Hansohn and have them ship it.

I’ve used my 7 on a custom 300wm elk rifle I had built. Killed a bull in CO this past season and saved our eardrums in the process. Takes some recoil out and definitely cuts down the muzzle blast.

Yea, it'l be a hunting rig. Made the mistake of getting a 6.5 ultra thinking I'd only use it on 6.5s, I've got a titan 338 and a saker 7.62 but they're awfully heavy. Perhaps the 5 would be good, although doesn't sound like it'l be very easy on the ears.

Question wasn't directed toward me, but I tried my 7 and 9 back to back on a 6.8sbr and couldn't tell a difference between them. There were 2 others with me standing a few feet behind me and they couldn't hear a difference either. I'm sure it will be different on a bolt gun, but on an AR I'd choose the 7 after this experience.

Ray from TBAC has a bunch of cool comparison videos from 338 down to the 5 on many different calibers on YouTube. It definitely isn’t a cut and dry thing with the differences between the 4 cans (Ultra 338,9,7,&5) with all the different calibers. There was only like 1.2-2 dB from 7 to 5 on 300 BLK. On the big boomers there was quite the difference and everything in between. It’s going to boil down to expectations and use. If you want the edge knocked off to be able to shoot once or twice without the NEED for ear pro (hunting), or smallest weight penalty. 5 is great across the board- otherwise stick with the longer options.

I don't know anyone personally who owns a 9 but you get to see lots of cans RO'ing a match. There is very little difference between a 7 and a 9. In fact there is very little difference between ANY of the major manufacturers standard size cans, at least from a few feet away. The only ones I can remember for sure that stand out are the TBAC 5 and Silencer Tech. Both are significantly louder than just about everything else out there. Enough to make you go "wtf?" when the timer starts because you are expecting a suppressed rifle to be at a certain level. They all have their purpose but at least for me I think the 7 hits the sweet spot.

This thread is making me think I should have went with a 7 instead of a 5. I only had YouTube for comparisons. Figured dB would tell the story, but after receiving my Maxim 9 I’m starting to question that. I bought it because I wanted compactness also. After watching MAC meter it at the ear and only seeing a 3 dB increase in the short configuration I figured this would be the way to go. After getting to finally bring it home I shot a couple mags through it and then shortened it. I only shot it once or twice like this. It went from sounding like a nail gun to sounding like a quiet gun. Kinda like the difference from shooting subs to supers where you are hearing the crack. Even though I thought I needed maximum compactness I switched it back to the full length configuration. The nail gun sound is much more impressive to the ear. Sounds like I may run into the same issue with the Ultra 5. Oh well, what’s another year long wait.

I’m always shooting mine so I can’t hear the difference but other say they do. I have a 30p1 and 30ps from tbac also. The p1 is mostly bench and prone use. I have hunted with it on a long barrel before and it is doable. The 7” cans are nicer though.

If I were you, and already bought a 9, i would go 7 unless you have guns larger than 30. Then I would go 338 just to cover them.

I’m form 1 building a 6” and a 12” can right now in 358. I’ll have all the bases covered except my 375.... that will be done shortly

I agree with this. I've never understood the whole "if you already have a 9 you might as well go full retard and get a 5." If you are someone who NEEDS a 5 you'll know it. Otherwise if you could only have one can get the 7 and if you already have a 9, get a 7.

I'm also Form 1'ing a 35 caliber can. Not because I have some real need for something in 35 (though I do have a couple 9.3 rifles/.366) but because I'm already going that much overbore to help with backpressure on a 308 with a poorly designed gas system. Might as well be able to pull double duty on a PCC or some future mid-bore. FYI I went with 7" because I still feel that is the sweet spot for performance/weight.

Shortly after I bought this can, they released the 6.5mm version, which I hear is slightly quieter than the .30cal can on a 6.5mm Creedmoor. But I’m happy I got the .30cal can for the extra versatility. On a long rang bolt rifle set-up I think having the longer 9” can is worth the added length. If I wanted a shorter can for a CQB weapon, I think I’d go down to a shorter length can and sacrifice some sound suppression.

Getting the 30 recored to an ultra will also gain some suppression if you want quieter.

I have the 7 and I love it. The 7 probably has close to 4k rounds of 308 thru it, bolt and semi. I get compliments from other shooters at the range as to how quite the 7 is.
The Ultra 9 is still in jail at this time.

My buddy has a 6.5 7" and I love the tone of it. Me on the other hand, I get complaints because peoples electronic hearing protection won't cut the noise off because it's under the noise threshold.
