Ordering a Noveske .308. Do I want a 14.5" or 21"

I'm thinking it will be my 100 to 800 yard EOTWAWKI blaster. I'm getting the .300 Blackout SBR for close-in zombie work and
will probably get a DTA SRS .338L for the really long stuff.
But here's the rub, the 21" barrel is ugly and a 14.5 with a
pinned AAC muzzle-break and AAC can looks so much better.
So, how much range will I really gain if I go for the aircraft carrier length 21-incher?

Huh?

Are you really considering getting the shorter barrel because the longer one is "ugly"?

Does your sling match your purse?

if you're getting a 300blk get the 21". i have a 20" at home and our work m110's are 20" about perfect length IMO but you could easily go down to 18.5 and still get just about as much distance out of it. i wouldn't go 14.5. shortest i would go is 16" if you want real distance out of it

LMFAO !!!! Big difference between a 14.5 and a 21" bbl, might want to take Big Joes advice and go for a 16 or 18" bbl.How much actual experience do you have shooting at 6-800 yds ? That is a ways out there with a Carbine like that if you are not used to it.

It boils down to what your needs are, its hard to answer you question with out more details of the usage of the weapon.
I have a 14.5 , 16 & 20 but they are all not setup the same.

Touche. As you can tell I'm a noob. Hunted a lot as a teen in the 70's, had 4 hours behind a M-16 in the USAF, kept my Model-37 and Mini-14 dusty for 30 years, bought a few hundred airguns over on the YellowForum, and even built a couple of 400 FPE .458 PCP's in recent years, but the truth is I've never shot at anything past 150 yards that I can remember. I'm hoping you old salty types can pour on just enough abuse to steer me toward the long range stuff that works, but I'll stll need a nasty-looki'n gun or two to bolster my ego and make the 33 year old kid in California want to come up for a visit.

For what it's worth, I've seen my cousin hit moving targets at 800 meters with his supressed KAC rifle in .308. His is a 12.5" with a Surefire supressor.

If it's going to be a range rifle get the 21" noveske. If you want something a little handier get the 16".

As an aside, noveske stuff is nice but a bit expensive - if you're going to spend that kind of $$$$ consider a 16-20" POF or maybe the 16" LMT. Also, I would be REALLY hesitant to order a rifle straight from any manufacturer as a lot of them like to make you wait to get your toy - check gunbroker, find a dealer with what you want in stock, and then have it shipped to your FFL.

Re: Ordering a Noveske .308. Do I want a 14.5" or 21"

OK, I was just having a little fun earlier. Hopefully there's no hard feelings. Quite frankly whenever zombies and end of the world stuff gets brought up my suggestion is to turn off the TV and come back to reality.

But anyways, BigJoe has the best answer here. Don't look for one rifle to do everything as you're going to have too many compromises then. Pick what the maximum capability your want it to be able to perform at, and go for that. If that's 800yds without getting its tail kicked by the wind, go for the longer barrel for the higher velocities and less downrange wind effect.

Re: Ordering a Noveske .308. Do I want a 14.5" or 21"

I love my 18 inch N6, but the barrel is on the heavy side. I think you save a whole pound if you drop down to the 16 inch.

Noveske stuff is in the pricey side, but IMHO, it is very worth it. That said, Even though all but one of my rifles are now Noveske, I did not start out buying them; I waited until I understood enough about shooting to appreciate their quality and value.

Re: Ordering a Noveske .308. Do I want a 14.5" or 21"

I'd go with neither and go 18". I have found my 18" in 223 to be fairly easy to get around, but it gains quite a bit of performance over 16" guns and loses little to 20" guns.

There isn't anything I can think of that a 18" 308 can do that a 16" can't. I have an 18" 308 btw.

Re: Ordering a Noveske .308. Do I want a 14.5" or 21"

I'm with you on that.. i once hammered a 1 moa plate with a 16" gasser at 800 yds. it sort of fell apart at 900 but honestly at the comps i shoot you could sit the 900 and 1000 yd stages out and still do very well if you had your head in the game. my next barrel might be a 16...

+1 on the 16" being the shortest length.
