Organizations that help Vets

A friend asked today what I think of Wounded Warriors as an organization. His work place is fishing around for an organization to support with donations.

Ive heard enough regarding Wounded Warriors ratio between money spent on vets verses money used for salary and overhead that its seems there may be more bang for your buck from other organizations. I also think its kind of crazy that WW wont take funding from lawful firearms related events designed to earn donation for their organization. Am I wrong in my beliefs?

I suggested contacting the USMC and see if Wounded Warrior BN can takefunds directly.

With no alternative Wounded Warrios is better than nothing but what is considered the best?

I have been told that there is an organization that ranks various charitable organizations with regard to how much they spend on "overhead" (salaries, travel, hotels and meals for level management) and how much money they actually put into what most of the public thinks their actual "work" is. I don't know what it is, but I'll see what I can find.

Organizations that can give you more info about various charities. Sorry they aren't hot links, but truly researching an organization will take more than a couple of clicks in any case.

you are 100% correct. give your money to the Fisher House.

The Fisher House definitely for helping tragically wounded vets and their families. Our unit ALWAYS raised money for the Fisher House. But everyone raises money for Fisher House. I think Ft. Lewis tries to donate a half or one million per year alone, not counting the mandatory charity contributions the 1SG orders.

For veterans navigating VA bullshit, American Legion has helped me the most. Trust me, those guys don't make shit but work their asses off for you. Many posts are suffering from lack of funding and membership and mine is close to closing. It's not just a clubhouse: it's where you go to get your all important all encompassing VA paperwork shuffled and where you go to just vent or talk to someone that gets it. This is for vets after the military decides they are done with their asses and shuffles 'em on down the line.

Wounded Warriors does some great things I'VE SEEN ON TV, but I'm a member and get full benefits from them, my wife sent them all the shit to see if they could help us, and all I've gotten is a bunch of goddamn requests to go running and biking. If I could fucking run, I wouldn't need them or the VA. They've been showing the same guy on a ventilator for years now.

Not to knock 'em, but how many Fisher House, American Legion or VFW commercials have you seen since you first heard of WW? Lots of labor unions USED to donate to these groups, you used to see the stickers on some of their hardhats when I was a kid (at least where I grew up). But not anymore.

PS, if you know of any vets that went through the medical board around 2000-2004 or something like that, they are eligible for re-evaluation with consideration of their medical records since. This is regardless of their medical separation.

I was in the WTU when I was getting out of service. I believe that's part of the WWP. Anyway, the biggest help they gave, was getting all your medical stuff done for you so you can keep drawing a check when you get out. Plus, they have classes that help out with becoming a civilian again. We had a few hunts put on for us as well. I just hate the damn commercials that make service men look so petty and needy.. They try to make people feel sorry for servicemen, to get money. I feel like they should make service men look more proud, I guess you could say.. I don't know??

In my area, I've got a ton of veteran support organizations. It's really all about looking in the right place. Alaska Healing Hearts came and supported a 5K fun run my SVO did a while back, and they do a ton of hunts at a private lodge for moose, brown bear, etc. Almost forgot to mention, the hunts are managed specifically to enable catastrophically disabled vets to do them.

But I found out about them through one of my VFW connections.

AVOW, Alaska Healing Waters... I met them all through F2F interaction.


but if your Google-fu is good, you can find them that way too. Hell, I'm putting together a Veteran Art Gallery this fall, and organizations are crawling out of the woodwork now that my Call to Artists is out on the interwebs.

If I could only get some artists to show up.....
