Original MB Precision 40X Repeater Conversion

I use my reamer exclusively (22LR RAVAGE available from JGS) and I believe Jelrod uses the EPS from PTG, but he'll have to confirm that.

I have some new stuff in testing now that uses my coned breech; you'd never know the difference between the cone and extractor cuts....

Excellent thank you Mike. Didnt think the cone would effect feeding but wanted to make sure. Mill shit the bed and thought a cone would be easier anyway.

ill take a look at the eps reamer. Havent had luck with ptg though lately, might just stick with your ravage if its made by jgs.

No problem. I'm very specific about how the cone is set up (because of how the 40X extractors are designed), much like the extractor cuts I use. If you want, I'll send prints (I believe I have your email address) of the coned breech and RAVAGE reamer.

Func, just emailed the reamer print, will send the coned breech print later today or tomorrow. Let me know if you have any questions about the chamber....

I just received my conversion back from Elrod. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but I have never been more excited about a gun than I am this one.

Cant wait to get some rounds through it!

Will be sending Jonathan another barreled action this wee for the conversion.

Issue with what?

MB

Sorry; what is the issue with making a clone of then 40X 22lr action from scratch? Is it that the actions are about as expensive as just buying a surplus 40X? I know people have made new actions, but I feel like they aren't currently active and had teething problems?

My comments were in response to Hoser and Rthurs comments above.

I wouldn't say there are "issues," inasmuch as there are absolute objectives that need to be met to make it make sense. While it should be obvious the solution of converting OEM 40X actions is successful, it's certainly not sustainable. In actuality, a new action makes more economic sense because the acquisition cost of the donor is eliminated; the consumer is buying a ready-to-barrel repeater instead of lumping additional costs on top of an already acquired action/rifle.

There's a light at the end of the tunnel....

Not sure what everyone else is running but killoughshootingsports has shillen ratchet barrels in stock. Just picked myself up a #7 profile. Been reading the ratchet has been performing pretty good and are taper lapped. For 299 shipped and in stock i figured its worth a shot.

MB,

I am ready for that barrel anytime. I had trouble finding a barrel for Jelrod to install.

What barrel manufacturer, twist rate and length do you recommend for these conversions?

There are a number of good rimfire barrel manufacturers and I've not tried them all, but what I have on hand are Bartlein, Krieger and one other cut-rifled maker I don't want to disclose just yet. Twist rate is 1:16 and barrel length is subjective.

Mike, I've got a Lilja tite bore bbl that's already been fitted & chambered for my 40XB that I'll probably not be using. I did a Krieger for the same action, and am happy enough with it that I'll be trying to peddle the Lilja. Would it be possible to cut your coned breech on a barrel that's already had the extractor slots cut? Thinking that'd make it easier to fit the Lilja to another 40X action - that make sense, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Flat, it is possible to cone the breech on your Lilja, but there are a few things to consider because the approach has to be different than machining a virgin barrel. What diameter cutter was used to machine the extractor cuts? Also, has the barrel been engraved with chamber or other info? If so, the engraving will likely be out of place when the barrel is torqued to a different receiver.

Shot mine at a local match last weekend. The format is 43 targets in 5 minutes. You can fire 50 shots. Targets were biathlon type from 60-225 yards. It's a real speed test.

I was running the bolt as hard and fast as I do on any slick feeding bolt gun...pretty fast. I had one hiccup with ejection that probably cost me the win (empty got stuck on the far side of the receiver requiring the mag to come out to clear it). Aside from that bit of bad luck, the thing runs as fast as anything I've shot. In fact, it seems to feed better the harder you work it.

Its far and away my favorite rifle.

Oh, cone breach, EPS reamer.

I was spotting for Tim and all his hits were centered up, he just ran out of time at 200 meters.

Not only was it a speed test/fest (it was the Regional NSSF Match after all) it took some accuracy and serious wind reading ability to hit stuff.

Most of the targets averaged about 2 MOA but one target at 145 yards was a 1.5x3 diamond. A tough shot on a windless day for sure.

I had brought my 40X out only because I didn't know if anyone would want to shoot the match but not have an appropriate rifle. I didn't want to burn Eley Red on a loaner rifle so I grabbed a couple bricks of Eley Practice 100. Turned out to work ok... While everyone was shooting the main match, Mary Beth and I just screwed around and practiced. After everyone had gone home, a couple of us shot a bunch off sticks.

The rifle that won again this year is an Elrod repeater using the same reamer and cone breech as Tims.

Mr Bush
I will start saving now........ next spring might be a pretty choice time...... just saying!
I need a full size .22 repeater in a good way and for a number of reasons.
Then I can give my savage to my niece who is really starting to shine at shooting and there is little I wont do to encourage the future of shooting sports.

Looking forward to seeing this action...

Way cool and thanks for a timeline. I have been keeping my eyes peeled for a 40x locally and havent found one. I do keep running into other stuff I have to have, like a '39 model 70.......

Can you make a poster of it? Kinda like the old bikini posters of Kathy Ireland I admired as a kid. Just on some brown or camo cordura, maybe with a stack if the mags and an unbedded carbon mcs t there with it? No hoochies required.
Recent changes around here have made me the head decorator so now its pictures of my kid, sentimental stuff from my grandparents, and other cool stuff, such as a nice poster of a sweet rimfire repeater action can decorate my walls.

Mike,
I spent all day both Saturday & Sunday on the tractor - 'weeds gone wild' seems to be the theme here after all the rain we received during the prolonged wheat harvest. Will transition to our big sprayer for tomorrow, and will be busy getting all the irrigation wells & sprinklers running again after that. Hope to accomplish most of this sort of stuff over the coming week...will give you a shout ASAP after that.

I cropped out a teaser....I'll start a new thread for the V-22 Rimfire Action within a week or so...

Hhmmmmm. Headed to the bathroom........

sorry to be so crude (you can tell how sorry by my deleting it). Very curious to see this all done and a vid of it running.
Headed on a trip with no wifi or cell reception for 10 days as of Thursday (feel bad for me) so I am sure it will be dialed up when I get back to reality.

Keep it up, I may just have to get silly sooner than spring!

thanks for the pics
