Out shooting my RRA AR-15 (video and pictures)

I did some shooting yesterday and took a few videos. I was shooting around 130-150 yards and then backed up and shot about 170-190 yards with the iron sights.

Usually I shoot into the berm and that works as a good backstop.

and it looks like you had glancing shots off that i-beam sending the projectiles who knows where. Those strays can go quite far. Not my idea of safe shooting.

Not all of them. Safety is not proven by the fact nothing happened.

I assumed he would infer that by my original statement, apparently not. To the OP, shoot 100 tracers at your targets there (after a good rain) and you may be unpleasantly surprised by what you see. It does not get much softer than water and when shooting barrels with the M2's we used to watch tracers come out of waves at a 90 degree angle and tumble a mile downrange (you could hear them humming as they tumbled) so don't assume dirt won't deflect a round.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm trying to keep you from making the local headlines...

Nice rifle. I love iron sights, they just present a little more of a challenge. Interesting that only 50% of your round penetrated the I-beam.

BTW, thanks for posting a pic of the front sight picture.

The rounds fired from farther back did not penetrate, most of the closer up shots did. Thanks for the comment, glad the pictures helped.

Many of your rounds will deflect and continue on for a ways.
Deflection can occur off of all kinds of surfaces/angles.
It will surprise anyone who doesn't already know.
It has been my experience that after deflection they always tumble.
Tumbling bullets are limited flight projectiles, but they still go all over the place.
The tracers will make it very obvious as to what is really going on.
Don't start any fires with them of course.
(So many people have, it's embarrassing how many)
For 223, if o-o buck shot wont make it then the tumblers probably won't either.
For a .50 BMG, they can go on, and on.

After listening to complete strangers on the web, and/or conducting the tracer test, you will likely move your shooting position away from any structures in, or around the target backdrop.
This is just good advice.
Nobody want's you to learn the hard way.

Kudos on working with your irons.
I am still impressed with the results I get using them.

+1 on the tracers. I once shot a 50BMG tracer into a berm at about 100yds and it popped out still on fire. I doubt Usain Bolt could've caught me sprinting down range (it was a private range and I was the only shooter). Nothing caught fire but it sure scared the hell out of me. I did get to recover the bullet though which I thought was pretty cool.

I am looking to add a big backstop to that spot I'm shooting at, I've also got another area that is safer that I plan on going to shoot at instead.
