Out with the 40XB again.

I managed to sneak out to the range today after they screwed up and forgot to notify me that I was not needed in court this morning. It left a hole in my schedule and some stress to be relieved.

What better than to exercise it with the 40XB and some ammo.

I this was rounds 50-102 that I sent through the barrel since it has been in my care. I was not originally impressed with the accuracy of this rifle. This session that changed greatly. The accuracy I am now getting out of it with the cheap 3-9x Simmons on it is amazing. I only shot a couple groups with it, but it's cleaning dot-drills at 50 yards and center punching most of them. This is absolutely the most accurate .22LR I own. I adjusted the trigger to 3 lbs and re-torqued the action screws and it seems to have made a world of difference.

I just ordered a Vortex Crossfire 6-24x50 for it. Once SWFA gets them back in stock I will toss that on and see if I can get some better resolution. I am also going to pull the stock off and re-finish it. I don't think I am going to replace it for awhile. It's a little ugly, but I love the feel of the wood and the comb is perfect for me.

nice rifle no matter what the stock looks like. probably the best platform for a bolt action .22 trainer / competition build. how much did you pick it up for?

there's a guy by the name of carter mayfield that produces some amazing groups at 100 and 200 with his, check out the groups in the rimfire comp threads.

you can always swap the stock out while you pretty up the wood.

The problem with swapping stock is the sewer pipe sized barrel would require hogging out a stock to fit. I have thought about dropping it into my M40A1 return stock while I work on the wood, but the bottom metal doesn't drop in to that stock and is going to take some work. Besides if I put the 40XB in the M40 stock, the MST-100 would just naturally gravitate towards the combo and we just don't need to go there.

I will probably break it all down next week sometime to work the stock over. It only takes me a couple days to refinish one since I am not worried about getting all the dents and dings out.

With good ammo and glass you can do unbelievable groups at 100 yards. If you ever run across federal UltraMatch UM1 ammo from the 90's grab it! I am diehard Winchester but am in the market for a HB 40X, here is my gal from the mid 50's, a 52C ,Ive shot D's and one E but love the repeater. The Federal AutoMatch from WallyWorld in 325 bulk packs @ 15.00 is good practice ammo.Great piece you have, Ill bet the wood is great under the years, most dents will steam out .

I was showing the rifle to my father this morning. One of the biggest kicks I get is handing it to someone then telling them it's a .22LR. So many people are used to the small light "toy" feeling 22's. I think that is one of the reasons I love this rifle so much.

I have 2 40xs and they are both tackdrivers. I had to get the second because my wife held the first one hostage. They are by far my favorite rifles to shoot. They also get the most attention at the range. Like yours, they drill dots at 50 and 100, and playing card sized steel is dead at 200-250.

I have one of those cheap 4" spinners that I picked up at Gander Mtn. for the boy to plink at. I think i am going to run that out to 200 and see what kind of fun I can have.

I really can't wait to get the Vortex scope on this. I am going to run out of elevation with the cheapo that I have on now. It also doesn't reset, so return to zero is a pain.

I don't want to dump too much cash on the 40x because the AR10 needs a better optic for work. However I am planning on spending a LOT of time on this rifle and need something adequate.

They are fantastic trainers.... so good glass is not a waste on these, IMO. Neither are good rings and a base with some elevation.

I have a SS on the wife's and an old USO on mine.

Did you make any parallax adjustments on your glass for the relatively shorter ranges of the .22lr rimfire round?

If you have the ability, it is a good idea to set the parallax for the shorter ranges.

That is why you will note that many rimfire specific scopes have an adjustable objective.

Yes, I understand that. For example, about 15 years ago, I purchased a Leupold matte Vari-X II 3-9x40mm with mil-dot reticle and target turrets to dedicate to a rimfire, and Leupold (or maybe it was Premier Reticle?) set the parallax for me so I could use it at relatively shorter ranges.

I shoot them primarily at 100 and 200 yards, so I have not had any issues with not being able to get paralax set properly. I have not had either scope modified in any way, but I can get both adjusted properly at 50yds (that is as close as I go and it's not very often).

I have that scope on a .308 Rem.700; I really lke the clarity but the reticule is a little thicker than I had hoped (still not bad) but a great value.

I have had trouble getting the parallax adjusted properly; and I am still putting it through some paces for testing uniformity and repeatability. Parallax issue is likely from my eye-glasses, - recently went to no-line bifocal.

Way jealous of the 40X!

Looks nice! I need to get mine out and shoot it more. I try to put it in the "extra" return stock that I have and see how it goes.
