SCRANTON AREA PENNSYLVANIA
i love squirrel hunting, a great way to spend a day, with usually alot of action. out in western / central pennsylvania, i've heard there are plenty fox squirrels, which are much larger than greys, averaging 1.5 lbs., and for a squirrel hunter, i think it's worth a trip, as we don't have any in my area that i know of.

i've been promising my uncle (also a "limb chicken" addict)the last few years that we'd go on a weekend trip, but i haven't been able to get good info on hot spots so we don't waste our time poking and hoping. public or private grounds with permission, where ever we can go.

i have a cousin that lives in mechanicsburg, and an aquatance out in huntington county that may allow us to stay on a friday / saturday night. even if we have to drive an hour from there to get to a spot, i think it'll be worth it.

i'm in the NE section of the state in the scranton area, i figure leave on a friday morning, get stuff squared away friday midday (it's a 2.5 hr trip to harrisburg area from home), maybe do some prelim scouting / hunting late friday afternoon, hunt hard saturday, return on sunday. maybe even leave on a thursday night and hunt hard friday and saturday, depending on what accomodations are available. we're not too "gucci", will sleep in the truck if someone will offer a driveway for a night or two!

i'm also thinking of doing a trip sometime when the foliage is less dense, to spot them better in the trees, increasing success. the fall season or even the after christmas season - either / or.

anyhow, anyone have suggestion on good spots, cheap hotel / motels in the same area, or willing to "hook up" on a weekend group hunt for fox squirrel?

PMs welcome if you are willing and want to take it offline for "hookups".

so where are they?

I don't know for sure, but we have more than a few in the West Chester area. I'm planning to hunt on some SGL near me towards the NW corner of Chester County on Saturday.

Shoot me a PM and maybe we can hunt together. I want to get some scouting time in on a couple of SGL plots in the next few weeks and I'll be using small game season for that.

I'm in 19382 and plan on hunting about 30min NW of me.

i have a small piece of property near cranberry that produces a good number of the larger fox squirrels. here's one I punched last year with the 22mag:

If you have ever held a marlin 882ssv or similar varmint barreled marlin, you will realize just how big this bastid was. He looked like a young groundhog running thru the scrub. He finally gave me a shot, and I pulled it into his shoulder instead of the headshot I was hoping for. ended up blowing out one whole shoulder and practically gutted him in the tree. Successfully made a full pot pie with just this guy and 2 little grays' hind quarters only. Both grays were nearly cut in half with the Remington 33gr Vmax rounds.

Good luck on your fox squack hunt this year!!

I was trying to dig up a pic of a gray or red squirrel to compare to the one above but am coming up short. I do have a pic of the leftover potpie that went to work with me for lunch though
