Rifle Scopes Painting a scope

Re: Painting a scope

That's a good question. It's one thing to paint a scope that you plan on keeping forever, but what if you want to sell it at some time? While I'm sure it's impossible to get it back to 'like-new' condition, some tips on minimizing the amount of damage to the scope would be good,... I'm sure this topic has been discussed, if there's a link it would be appreciated.

Re: Painting a scope

Well I sent 2 Nightforces to GAP and decided to let them paint both of them OD green. A 3.5-15 on a .308 and a 5.5-22 on a 7MM mag. Don't ever plan on selling them, but if I do they will go with the rifles and I am pretty sure GAP will do a good job on them.

Re: Painting a scope

personally, i won't paint a scope again. painting it is not hard. selling it, trading it or just swapping it to another rifle down the road is a bit harder. if you are really going to be hiding from someone/something, that is a different story.

Re: Painting a scope

The real problem with painting a scope is the prep. Most factory finishes are very slick. A good finish depends on texturing the surface in some way, which will mess up the original finish. Otherwise you might as well just spray bomb it and not worry about it.

Re: Painting a scope

I'd say prep work is the key. I just duracoated my Mark 4. It took me about 2 years to grow a pair and do it. The hardest part was scratching up the surface for the paint to stick to it. Once I started it was easy bc I had to go through with it. Take your time with the tape and tape off what you don't want painted. Key....Don't Rush

Re: Painting a scope

This isnt that hard. No need to be scared of it.

Stuff cotton balls (as many as will fit) under the Butler Creeks. Tape off what you dont want painted (knob markings, etc).

Paint it.

Take off the tape and lightly dust over the black where the tape was, so it doesnt stand out like a sore thumb.

Done.

I don't know. I think I am getting scopes painted with full builds, it was fairly cheap.

Email them.
