Hey everyone, been searching all over the interweb and reading the forums here for the last few weeks trying to see what's been covered, and what hasn't been.

I have a Remington 700SS R5 with the ugly green/black HS Precision stock. I like the stock, just not the color, and don't want to swap it out for another one if not required.

Been reading of alot of folks using various colors of Krylon for this project, but can anyone post pictures of some done in black? I'm not sure if I should try flat or satin, and if I should do anything as far as a flat or satin clear as well.

Any pictures and methods that you've used with success would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Here is the ugly green that I speak of...how would you handle this?

Thanks, I'm gonna keep shooting it either way, I was just hoping the color would grow on me as I owned it longer. No such luck there.

It looks better in the shade or in the safe. I don't like it in the light.

Re: Painting HS Precision Stocks

I use Krylon on my one and only rifle. I spray my scope and everything. Use the type with the military looking cans. Has a Hummer on it I think.

Krylon will come off when you want it to and is great camo. Especially if done over a base color that wont come off as easily as the Krylon(like Cerakote, bluing, etc.)

If you want your stock black, buy some black, tape off the areas you dont want painted with blue tape, then go at it.

If you dont like the outcome its easily removed with acetone, especially if its only been on there a day or two.

Clean the surface well before you paint it. And go easy on it for 2 weeks. It takes about that long to cure. It will dry fast as hell but it will not be cure for a while. I can notice a huge difference between 2 day old and 2 week old Krylon.

I wish more people would use it. If done with some sense and deliberation, it looks feakin awesome.

Re: Painting HS Precision Stocks

Buy a can of Bulldog Adhesion Promoter and spray it with the spray paint of your choice. The BDA helps even Krylon to stick to anything better and reduce scratches and wear.

Yessir!! I think this is the stuff used to keep paint on fiberglass. I have a can and use it when bedding synthetic stocks to make the compound stick.

Re: Painting HS Precision Stocks

Shoot it with whatever color/finish you want. When it chips and flakes due to use, you can shoot it again and it'll look brand new...if you are into the brand new look.

+1

Krylon wears pretty well in my experience as well. I paint all my working guns. Got a .22-250 thats been white for 6 years now. Other than being slightly dirty from grime and grease, and a few small door dings on the barrel, she looks like she was painted yesterday. I scrubbed her down last year with some warm water and simple green, really made it look like the paint was just done.

I do try to let them cure a couple weeks before using/fiddling with. Like was said, it dries in 15 minutes, but that dont mean its sticking well yet.

And no matter what paint type you use, prep work is 99% of the process. If you dont prep it right, just about anything will look like crap.

Re: Painting HS Precision Stocks

Thanks for the info everyone. Gonna do some checking on the Bulldog Adhesion Promotor and pick up some paint so I'll be ready when I get a warm day here.

Flat black or satin black?

Anyone have any pictures of them done up this way?

Thanks...

Re: Painting HS Precision Stocks

Picked up some black Krylon this afternoon after work. Gonna get the stock off and prepped tomorrow, and paint will fly Thursday evening. I'll be sure to post pictures when it's completed!

Re: Painting HS Precision Stocks

Just buy a new HS Precision stock and sell that nasty green one. ???

( I have the same stock and found a guy that paid 380.00 for it.. then i bought a HS precision PST0011

There's no way you can convince me that someone actually likes this thing...haha.

Re: Painting HS Precision Stocks

I painted mine several times. I get sick of colors quickly. I'm probably due for a new color. Painting the stock different colors is a ploy to confuse my wife when I actually get a new gun. "Honey, its the same rifle, I just painted it." Hahaha.

I just sand down whatever color I had on it starting with 200 grit and then moving to 400 grit. Then I degrease with carb cleaner. This often takes off the last remaining remnants of paint. Once the surface is clean and smooth, I use Bulldog Adhesion Promoter. A couple light coats will usually do. Then I spray on some sandable primer. A couple light coats and I lightly scuff with steel wool. Then I apply several light coats of the color of my choice.

Finally, I'll spray on a few light coats of matte clear coat for staying power. This method has worked for me.

Re: Painting HS Precision Stocks

Got the stock off, all cleaned up, and buttpad and bedding taped off. Gonna let the paint fly tomorrow. I called HS Precision to check price and time on a new stock in black and they fellow tried to talk me into just sending mine in for paint. That was a great idea, except I can spray lots of Krylon for $80. If I don't like it, I'll buy a nicer one and sell this one. That will be decided tomorrow....

Re: Painting HS Precision Stocks

Well, round one didn't go so well. Got it all painted up in satin black and it was too glossy, so out came the acetone 3 hours later and it was removed. Got some flat black to try out tomorrow evening. Paint job came out nice, just didn't like it cause it was too shiny. Strike one....

Re: Painting HS Precision Stocks

I have had excellent results with Brownells Aluma Hide II, It does require a long cure time but dries very hard once cured. The dry time is dependant on ambient temperatures, Once the paint stops off gassing, (giving off an odor) it is dry, I hang my items from wire suspended next to the pipe on my woodstove in my garage for a couple of days, it may take a couple of weeks to dry without heating it.

Re: Painting HS Precision Stocks

Well, round two with the ultra flat Krylon Fusion went just as planned. 100% better. I like it alot now. It's in the back room hanging for a few days while I work on the racecar. I'll bolt it back to the action in a week or two. I'll be sure to post pictures as soon as it's back together.

Re: Painting HS Precision Stocks

As promised, here are some photos of the finished product. Nothing too fancy, but that's just the way I like it. Gonna let it sit in the safe a few weeks before shooting it to be sure the paint is fully hardened.
