People's thoughts on chamber adapters

Was recently given a long action 30-06 Rem 700 sporter, really nice rifle in a caliber I haven't used in 20+ years (my only bolt gun is a 7mm).

I don't own a single round of 30-06, but I have around 2500 rounds of .308 sitting around for my AR-10 and was toying with the idea of just picking up a chamber adapter from MCA (http://www.mcace.com/adapters.htm). Aside from the very fair argument of "if you want a .308 bolt action, buy a .308 bolt action", what are peoples thoughts on these chamber adapters? Do they have an effect on accuracy or barrel life?

Re: People's thoughts on chamber adapters

I tried one of these GI chamber adapters years ago and i would not recommend using one in a "nice rifle" unless you want to create a permanent ring in the chamber. The headspace can be a serious issue with these adapters as well.

Thanks guys. I had thought about rechambering or finding someone that might want to swap barrels (or finding a sporter 308 take-off for cheap), but it seemed like kind of a long shot finding someone wanting to go from 308 to 30-06. For $25 the chamber adapter seemed like a pretty minimal investment to tinker with--but Force is right, there's probably a good reason these adapters aren't in wide use!

Definitely love the 30-06 rgvt4--I think this was the second round I ever fired after a 22 (after the whole "it don't kick that bad" egging... I must have been 7 or 8).
