Does anyone on here have any experience running this laser and how far out will that illuminator reliably light up steel? LA-5 B

Actually the illuminator on a la5b is 80mw. But like I said the two I've seen side by side the la5 had a bit of an edge. Not trying to be a smart ass, but probably way further than most anyone can realistically shoot at night. I am not a long range night shooter. There might be some out there that could do it, but they would be a rare individual I would think. However, there are members on here that likely are some of the best out there that can shed much more insight than I could ever possibly offer.
The LA 5 B at 100mW has 10mW more than the older 90 mW Luna's at 810nm.
Here is a pick of a Luna ELIR 3 90mW at 810nm. The beam is on a known 1,000 yard target which is just at the edge of those woods. I would say the Luna still has plenty of power and focus ability to stretch on out another 500 to 1,000 yards. Maybe this will give you some idea of what the LA 5 is capable of.

There's video of a Spectre using one and it just lights up the whole goddamn grid square like daylight.
Is the beam as focused on the LA-5? Is it as narrow as the picture? Thanks!Actually the illuminator on a la5b is 80mw. But like I said the two I've seen side by side the la5 had a bit of an edge.
I saw testing of something awfully similar to that years ago, but visible instead of IR. We could see the from an aircraft from probably 5-8 miles out. With it being a visible laser, it seemed like a good way to get every wanna-be AA and SAM gunner within a couple dozen miles to shoot at you, tho.
Yeah man, that rings a bell too... In that case weren't they using a Hellfighter?

@Desert Rat Here is a photo taken with an handheld Iphone up to a PVS14 with a 5X magnifier on it. My focus ain't the best.
Those beams are exactly 1,000 yards from where the photo was taken from. Top beam is a Luna ELIR-3 70mW at 850nm (current version). The bottom beam is the ELIR-3 90mW at 810nm (previous version)
Both are wide open on the Rheostat. The pic does not do either beam justice. Both are awesome at that range and past. All that crap to the left of the beam is BUGS reflecting in the beam. Summertime in Mississippi. Keep in mind there are also tons of bugs out in the path of my photo you just don't realize it because I was to the side of these beams being pointed by another guy and all the bugs in front of me are not being reflected via IR light.

I have never had any issues with the Luna ELIR-3 shutting off under recoil. But I run on 556. I also run rechargable RCR 123 batteries which are a tad longer. I also put the Luna Surefire adapters on them with Surefire Switch's so when I get through with "tuning" a Luna it is good to go in that department. I do stretch out the Surefire spring some such that it is making strong contact with the RCR 123 battery.
Now durability. I have not had any issues with breaking them, but don't bang the sh^t out of them either. They are a Thermoplastic housing that is fairly durable, but not as strong as a all aluminum Dbal. Hell, the plastic PEQ15's break pretty often and them things are expensive.
I did have one issue with the metal housing where the male portion of the metal battery holder got a little loose in the Thermoplastic housing (molded in) so I quickly solved that by drilling, taping and installing 3 screws into the back end. That is another standard "Tuning" procedure I do on the Luna's. As you can see I hang a lot more stuff off the back end of the Luna than just the regular tail switch that comes with it. That tail switch is only so so in my book. The Luna setup in the pictures below have been rock solid for me.
