This post may already be on here, I searched but didn't get an exact answer. I've gotten 2 AR-15's with 14.5" barrels, one was put together in NC and another in TN. Both have blind pinned flash suppressors on them. Neither are welded over and both were done by certified gunsmiths. The ATF states in Chapter 2.1.1 "Permanent methods of
attachment include full-fusion gas or electric steel-seam welding, high-temperature (1100°F) silver
soldering, or blind pinning with the pin head welded over." I was told that blind pinning was a legal way to perminantly attach the flash suppressor without welding. I have my Mig welder up an running again and I've got some silver solder still sitting around. Do I need to drill out the pin a bit and weld over the hole to cover the pin? Is blind pinning into the threads a legal way of attaching the flash suppressor? Does it need to be welded or is the pin good enough? I just want to make sure that I'm good before I start going to the range again.

Re: Perminant attachment or flash suppressor

I'm no ATF legalese expert, but so far as I know, blind pinning is perfect legal. You shouldn't have to weld over anything. I would be willing to bet that most, if not all commercial AR's are blind pinned.

Mechanical fastening with just a pin is not permanent and not legal. The pin must be welded over and you should do it ASAP
