Pics pls - Mcmillan lightweights w/ Varmint barrel

I have been doing my homework and I am looking for pics of McMillan remington Sporter/HTG/Varmint etc shown with varmint or similar barrel profiles. I started by odering a manners super light after seeing them listed on stockys as being available for SPS, VTR etc barrels. After talking to the people at manners, I found that it cannot be had in anything larger than magnum contour. I also looked into the B&C alaskan II that is not available for varmint profile, then the new HS precision lightweight 094 ?? I think. Same deal. Then I tried Mcmillan and it looks like I can NOT get a edge lightweigh in varmint, but I CAN get most of the hunting profile stocks in edge fill to fit the varmint profile. I am leaning towards the remington sporter profile, but would likely take anything in the hunting weight stocks. I have seen many pics of guns with sleek looking mountain profiles and sporter barrels that look great in these stocks, but I would like to see some heavier barrels in them. The HS precision 096 (sim to 5r stock) is 2.5 lbs I would like to save some on the stock, since I plan to add an HS prec DBM (prefer the flush mount for hunting). The rifle weighs 9lbs as pictured.

The rifle below is my first precision (non stock rifle) it started out as a 223 VTR and is on its way to becoming my ultimate light(er) weight varmint rife. Currently sporting:

VXIII 4.5-15x40 with M1 knobs
HS precision 096 stock
talley lightweights extra low
atlas bipod

I know. Lonewolf makes a great looking 16oz stock for the heavier carbon barrels, but its $800. According to Kate at Mcmillan, any of the hunting stocks with edge fill are available in a varmint contour and edge fill. I can't get the molded in colors with this option, but they should be around 28-30ozs. If anyone can confirm the weights, let me know!

Also - if anyone can confirm, is a varmint profile larger/smaller than a #5? The web site says rem sporter available with up to #5 contour.

Lone Wolf is junk. The Rem Sporter is easily my least favorite Remington pattern. Like the Classic it will take a PSS/Varmint spout,BT/DT. Your weights are accurate.

I'd go Remington Hunter,if forced to keep the wrapped spout.

MCM can make the HTG with the edge fill, i've seen a few sell on this board before. Give them a buzz, shouldn't be a big deal. Plus, you can get whatever options you want that way as far as DBM, flush cups, etc.

I'm quicker to weigh performance,than dollars. I'd cite that a lesser contour in a more svelte stock,would weigh less,balance/handle better and be no concession in the Agg. Department.

Though on the "downside",it would cost less too.

The "wrapped spout" was about $900, and I plan on keeping it. In fact, I haven't shot it yet, tomorrow after the morning goose hunt should have time. The wrapped barrel is 1lb lighter (2.25lb) than the remington VTR barrel it replaced. It has completely different balance characteristics, since the weight forward feel is gone. I can add a DBM or a heavier (nightforce?) scope down the road and both will be right at the carry/balance point. I do not really want a 6-7lb rifle for accurate shooting, 8-9 is ideal set up the way I want. I realize its not for everyone, but it is something I have wanted to do for the last few years.

HTG with Edge Fill, Rem Varmint Contour, BDL, 13.5" length of pull, and four flush cups is ~ 1.5lbs.

Go with an A1-3 in Edge if you plan on a 50mm scope. The HTG is really meant for a 44mm max scope bell. The A1-3 will be an ounce or two heavier but the comb height is better.

There have recently been two “lightweight rifle build” threads. One should be on the first or second page of the forums. The other is probably much further back now. There is also a picture thread for “20 inchers” that may prove of interest to you as well.

Pretty impressive, eh? The HTG is a greta huntings tock for smaller scopes.

I'm upgrading to a A1-3 because I find the HTG a pain with my 50mm NF. If I remember correctly the the A1-3 with Edge is about 30 oz. I spoke to McMillan about this a while back. I have one due to arrive in a three weeks or so. I'm curious to see how it compares to my HTG Egde.

Edit my post as looking back at your pictures you've obviously been around HTG's. They can be had very light with Edge fill. 1.5lbs is a rough measure on a bathroom scale. Could be off an ounce or two- but it's no pipe dream.

You may own a lot of rifles, Voracious, but it doesn’t mean you know everything. A quick search reveals I am not the only one living the 'dream.' I will admit my memory was off on the A1-3 though. It can be had as light as the HTG.

Now thats what I'm talkin about! Thanks Voracious, thats a great batch of bolt guns. You must have mcmillan on speed dial! Thanks for the clarification on the models and the preferences. The remington hunter pic you showed, is that heavier than sendaro? I like the remington hunter and the M40A1, but the simple lines of the classic look hard to beat as well. Are many of yours edge fill? Am I correct that the molded in colors or swirls are NOT available with edge fill?

The Hunter and Sendero are typically of like weights and for alternate reasons.

I didn't read all the replies, maybe it was mentioned...why can't you simply inlet the stock to the dimensions you want?

I'd find the stock design you want, order it with the largest contour they'll do...or the fastest one available and have a local machinist cut the bbl channel you need.

Sako 75 Varminter in a McMillan Sako Hunter stock. It handles real nice and keeps the rifle on the sticks. In .204 Ruger I can witness all my hits.

I'd disagree. Varmint barrels balance overall better for me as long as the length is 24" or less. A little heavier stock and a med palma will balance even better. When I say balance I'm referring to shooting off-hand.

This weighs a hair over 9 lbs as outfitted in the picture. The stock is an edge A3. Mcmillan told me it was around 1.5 pounds. The barrel is similar to rem varmint contour but heavily fluted and 19" long with the brake.
