Pinched Siatic Nerve

    Anybody have any stretches or workouts that may relieve some of the pain from a pinched siatic nerve? My left leg keeps going nub and the constant pain sucks ass and while going to the physical therapy doesn't start for 2 weeks, I was wondering if somebody had some hints to get me through til then :)
     
    +1.....this is the absolute best thing for your body in my opinion. even better then most strength training regiments. yoga is very strengthening on its own but the benefits of flexibility and circulation are fantastic.
     
    Yoga is great you might want to try traction I had pain so bad I couldn't sit up rite I did some injections and traction and its been about 5years ago I go get a injection periodically but the pain is pretty much gone you can get a portable traction table to use at home and they work great . I forgot to mention I had a partial discectomy about 14 years ago I would avoid surgery as long as you can
     
    I know this may sound strange, but do you carry your wallet in your left hip pocket? My nerve was killing me a couple of years ago, and nothing was helping. A friend suggested that a wallet with too much junk (Lord knows it was not packed with money) in it might be putting pressure on it. I took the wallet out, culled a bunch of unneeded junk out of it, and did not carry it for about a week. Boom, problem solved. This may not be your problem, but it is worth trying if that is how you carry your wallet.

    No wallet back there, but the duty belt doesn't make things any better, especially when trying to sit in any seats.
     
    THank you, thank you, thank you. THis stretch is hell on right where it hurts, but it feels SOOO much better after dloing it a few times a day!!

    I learned a long time ago to keep all my crap on the sides and front of my belt. That, and only carry the bare essentials (radio, glock, extra mags, cuffs, taser, gloves, asp, etc.). Anything at or near my kidney area was quickly relocated.

    Important (for me anyway) to stay committed to the stretches. If I get lazy and skip more than a day or two it's almost like I start over from the beginning.

    some of the poses in Sun Salutation actually puts stress on back, esp. lower back.

    For example, unsupported straight back forward bend if your body doesn't line up flush with shin/knee.

    The other problem is that in some of the unsupported back bend in yoga, most folks tend to do too much lumbar/low back only instead of distributing the back bend with mid/upper back(thoracic region).


    Dont mean to sound the Gaydar, but Yoga is the key. Learn how to do sun siatations. Easy, takes maybe 10 mins a day and you will feel massive relief.
     
    I'm currently in the same situation my problem started because of a deployment. My nerve is partially severed because I kept pushing And waited to long to get it closely looked at. Now they want to medically discharge me Said I'd be dealing with the pain the rest of my life
    I started yoga. Huge helper. Helps me get through my days with alot less pain
     
    If your a side sleeper a pillow between the legs does wonders. I had horrible sciatic last year at this time and could not get rid of it no matter what stretching or exercise I did. Turned out to be as simple the pillow and within a a couple weeks I was almost 100%. Depending on the day I still get some pain from time-to-time but nowhere near like it was last year. Good luck!!
     
    Work on your core muscles and have the PT design a good set of stretches for you to do daily. I have degenerative scoliosis in L4 through T12 from years of playing sports and other abuses. I am avid cyclist and every once in awhile my sciatic nerve gets tweaked and get muscle spasms in my lower back as well. For one thing stay mobile despite the discomfort and eventually things will settle down. I used to yoga on a regular basis but it certain poses were actually aggravating the condition so I limit what positions I now do. Strengthening and stabilizing your core is probably one of the best things you can do and avoid sitting for long periods of time if possible. Also keeps those IT bands and hamstrings flexible.
     
    I was quite skeptical when my wife gave me the advice to try out some of her yoga stretches when I was dealing with a lot of lower back and leg pain (and topical numbness in my lower extremities) after an MVA.

    She's far from the "yoga is the only workout I need" type of woman so I gave it a try. It made a big difference in less than a week. Between that and a very aggressive chiropractor I avoided the need for pain killers and with my job responsibilities I couldn't take them anyway so I was just fighting through the pain all day anyway.

    This was something my chiropractor told me too and it really works. I switched from carrying a tri-fold in my back right pocket to carrying a money/card clip in my front pocket because of it.
