Playing with SD's; Size does matter.

My wife gave me my Xmas present early; A Garmin Xero. So I had to play with it. I chronographed 25 shots while practicing at 100 yards. The loads are what was left of my break-in batch I had thrown together on the progressive press.
Green is all shots included in the SD.
Yellow is every 5th shot included in the SD.
Red is every 3rd shot.

Sample size does matter.

Yeah, since I got my Garmin, I'm chronoing everything now too (use to use MagnetoSpeed on just a few shots). I keep a record of just about everything (e.g. primer seating depths, heights of the primers, powder moisture content, etc. - yeah, maybe a little over the top ):

Note the 80 shots my .308 (the most left column of numbers) and the next column is the number of shots chronoed). These were virgin Alpha brass that I was fire forming and very surprised to see an SD of 6.2 with an ES of 29.

In contrast to these numbers, I had tried some Rem 9.5 primers for the first time using the same loads as above. 10 shots gave me an SD of 14.2 and and ES of 41, which was just as surprising, but awful. Tried a good load of H-4895 I hadn't used in a long time with those 9.5 primers and it was even uglier with an SD of 20.4 and ES of 87 over 45 shots. Obviously, to me anyway, those Remington 9.5 primers I bought are not working for me. The other is the pic above were CCI 400's, CCI 200's, Fed 210's.

Sometimes, it just doesn't take a lot of shots to determine if a particular load just doesn't work.

With H414 it often pays to play with neck tension and primers.
No guarantees, but worth a look if you want that particular load to do better at distance. It will probably shoot just fine inside 400 yards anyway.
I hope Santa remembered to put something nice under the tree for your wife since she obviously made The Nice List.

No guarantees, but worth a look if you want that particular load to do better at distance. It will probably shoot just fine inside 400 yards anyway.

I'm using up remnants of powder and factory 2nd ELD-X bullets. For 100 yard dot drills and such and I'm not too concerned about SD. I was just playing around with my new Garmin toy.
