I am training in sniper marksmanship in SEAL RTN Shooting range Sattahip Thailand and now making decision to purchase between
1. remington40xbks 1/12 twist 27.25inch barrel. about 3000 USD
2. remington700 5R 1/11.25 twist 24 inch barrel about 1780 USD

for paper punching 600 - 800 metres and compare with my old 700 XCR
which one is worthy to further invest campare to 700 xcr also? please give me your data or any experiecnce about them
I will collect information as much as possible , Thank you

Bullets in stock is Lapua 167 grain at my shooting range.

Both is sound good but I can only afford 1 of them. I try to search some relate topic but can't find any if there is some topic about comparing them please tell me .

By the way Now I am using Remington 700 xcr tactical Longrange with stock of HS precissionPST 0025 and Love it very much

Given the choice, I would go with the 5R.

Mine was a "tack driver" and if I had not wanted to go custom, I would still be shooting it.

Consistently .5 MOA or better with the right driver.

I have not shot the 5R so this is a bit of a one sided. But having said that I have owned a few 40XB rifles: 40XBrangemasters, 40XBBR, and a 40XB Tactical. They have all been as accurate as any custom rifle I have owned. So if accuracy is you intent I beleve the 40X rifles will serve you better.

I have a 5R and a xcr tactical, and i use my 5R for everything, so my choice 5R and u wont regret it.

No experience with the 40X but if you are willing to spend ~$3000 then you should probably include the TRG-22 and the AIAE in your analysis.

I have a 5R and I love it. I know when I miss a shot, it's me and not the gun. I've had some ridiculous 100 yd groups with that gun. I'm not sure it would run with the TRG and AIAE from a durability perspective though.

He is paying a premium due to location.

The 40X is a custom shop rifle, 3000 is not a bad price for what is essentially a custom build.

The 5R is a fine rifle but I really think, in the long run, you will be more pleased with the 40x.

Better stock, better trigger and custom shop attention.

I vote for the 5R as well. It shoots .5 groups with Federal gold match 168 & 175, Hornady tap, and most handloads. Mine' s bone stock. I've found some handloads with the 175SMK that are .3s. Which ever you pick, practice, practice, practice!

5R for several reasons....cost, barrel length being the big two. You can save money on the 5R and shoot at accurate. If you need a new trigger just buy one off the accessories area of the hide or order one. Put a bolt knob extension on it from errr the name escapes me on the Hide here...I will look it up and get back to you.

Having said that.....I would really just keep the XCR LR you have and up grade the stock and get better optics. You have a great trigger same as in the 40x actually already. I have two XCRs and you will not gain anything with the 5R over them except for a shorter lenth more manuverable barrel length. 308 doesn't need 28' except for Palma duties.

If you location makes it difficult to upgrade parts on a rifle then look into the 5R but you won't be getting anything better than your XCR in my opinion...its like buyting a Yellow Toyota vs a Red Toyota. Different but same.

The 5R is nothing more than a standard heavy barreled 700 with 5R rifling. The 40X is a custom shop rifle. You MAY get a 5R to shoot just as well as a 40X, But generally with handloads. I'd probably go 5R and either shoot it and then rebarrel and customize when bbl is shot out or when you shoot better than the rifle.

5R = 5
40X = 4

The reason is in my Location it is hard to modifie match grade barrel, I am fine with XCR and can make a good group but want make some upgrade.

the rifle company that can send the products to my country is very few so some of companys you have mentioned can't be my choice, by the way my friends will order benchrest rifles from Mark King Rifles , do you have any comments about Mark King ?

That is precisely what i'm doing. Shooting my 5R and upgrading as i go along. But it's an excellent shooting stock rifle.

i have a 40xb tactical and love it. its a hammer ,im currently feeding it lapua 167g which is exactly what you said you would be buying.i dropped mine into an aics.

I had 40XB built in the custom shop a few years back, it was one of the most accurate rifles I have owned. The 700 5R is a nice factory rifle, but its so close to the XCR as to make me wonder what if anything you would be gaining other than an 11.25 twist with 5 rifle lands in your barrel. My 40XB shot everything well, not just handloads. The prices you quoted make the 40X seem like a better buy for your money. It not as inflated as the 5R is. You may get a 5R that will shoot .5moa, you are guaranteed to get rifle that will shoot .5moa or better with the 40X. If you can swing the money I would buy the 40X. If you are ordering it from the factory you can have them cut the barrel, I did as well as a few other options.

No, XCR is very capable rifle it can make 0.5 inch group or smaller for 150-170 grn. but I just want to make some upgrade , In my country it is hard to find Great rifle smith to change match grade Barrel of my rifle (it is about 2000 shots runned and I wonder when it passed 5000 shots where I can go to change barrel?). If I go to wrong place the 700XRC will go downgrade instead of upgrade.


If I don't forget I will take photos of rifle shooting range and my XCR.
