Extremely frustrated, please help me

I have had this AR10 for a couple years now. I have been reloading 308 for over 2 years now. I have a 700 5R that I shoot 1/2-3/4 moa out to 300 yards and a 223 ar that I shoot less than moa.

I have given up reloading for this rifle a couple times and started over. When trying to do an OCD test my first 3 groups are below. this gun has briefly shot really nice sub moa groups with both factory and handloads.

Warne mounts
175 smk
Lc04 brass
41.5, 41.8, 42.0. Varget
Range 128 yards
Downhill slope. Approx 15'


In the first group the first shot is just above the orange dot and the next 3 group at 11oclock in a nice little group. I placed shot number 5 on the next dot and it was close to the placement of the group.

Group 2
Adjusted poi down 3 moa
2 shots touching and the next 2 shots touching and a single shot 1" higher

Group 3
First 2 touching next 3 spread above

these shots were spead over An hour and a half

Is this something that I am doing?

What can I try to test different possibilities?
or symptomatic of an equipment issue. At one time I suspected that the barrel may be loose. I tightened Per instructions.(not my first ar barrel)
Headspace has been checked by my gunsmith and was fine.

All help and advice is greatly appreciated.

That was very helpful. I am going on the assumption that it is me.

It looks like I am getting two seperate groups. I'll take my time and get back to fundamentals.

I believe this rifle is capable of great accuracy if I can get my issues worked out.

You might try a different barrel in it! My Kreiger will shoot 3/4 min w/ LC 93-005.

When rifles group well, but the groups move around, my first suspect is parallax. Same thing with two-grouping. A good group is a good group. Bad group placement is usually a shooter-related issue.

OP,

I'd suspect your concentration is on the target/reticle relationship and that this has become a distraction to what's really important, which is a consistent relationship between you, the gun, and the ground, until recoil has subsided. You appear to not be cognizant of the fundamentals, or to have been deceived by the scope into believing it exclusively would give you recognition for where the rifle was pointed. Thing is, without recognition of how to get or maintain a consistent position, things fall apart pretty fast once the bullet begins to travel from where it rests in the chamber.

primer pocket unified
is there a powder blowback around the case ? If so is it darker on one side lighter than the other ? Are you using a small base die ? The ars were set up for that . DPMS 1-10 26"heavy upper had same problem . Also went to a stick powder . Mag primer . One other thought your crown might be bad .

The key to shooter/target analysis is breaking it down to what is and what is not consistent; and, unless the rifle is broken, or the ammunition is defective, problems are likely about the shooter's inconsistent relationship between the gun and ground.

Typically, the DPMS LR 308 style rifles are very easy to control when the scope has been properly mounted. Only when the shooter bypasses building the position and instead puts all focus on the target/reticle relationship, or fails to control the rifle consistently from the time the trigger is pulled until recoil has ceased will errors be pronounced.

No doubt, massaging ammunition will help a shooter realize better results; however, the effort is moot unless marksmanship has been fully developed. Here, the OP would have no reason to post if indeed marksmanship was not the issue.
