PMAG's Opinions on Feeding & Function

Have not ever used PMAG's and just wanting to hear from people on their feeding and function. Generally "good to go" out of the wrapper or like the old days where some magazines were good and you kept them and some were not and you got rid of them?

All experiences on this welcome.

Packed a full loadout in Iraq and then plus some never had a jam when I fired and the mags were easy to dish in and out of pouches don't get the ones with the windows, they are like 3 dollars more per mag for nothing. Only downside is you when you disassemble them after a mars duststorm day if you bend something wrong you can't bend it back like a metal mag but I loved them.

Friends of mine use them in 30 rnd 5.56 and they love them. I have several for a DPMS LR308 and those have been great as well!

I have 2 10 round .308 pmags from Midwest PX, 10 standard 20rd .308 pmags, and 10 of each 30 and 20 round .223 pmags. Never one problem due to mags. .223 also have ran my 300 blackout for the last few months with no problems.

I have had experience with the .308 and 5.56 Pmags and I have never had any issues with them. I have thoroughly abused them in the field yet I have never managed to actually break one. As for their standard USGI counterparts I have had a few issues with them ranging from feeding, failure, etc. The metal mags are more liable to dent, break and even fall apart (once watched a mag with 28 rounds dropped and it came apart). Another advantage of the Pmags is their enhanced noise discipline attrributes.

Having said all that, if you are just going to the range to plink off a few rounds and already have a few metal mags I dont see any real need to upgrade.

Used in Afghanistan without a single problem. They are now the gold standard of AR magazines.

I did have one issue with the 20 round pmags in .223/5.56....I guess I'm the only one.

I had to do some sanding inside to get my 4 20rnd pmags to feed 77gr SMKs from Southwest Ammo. Before the sanding, I had no problems when loading mags to 5 rounds. But somewhere between 6 and 20 rounds they would bind up and not feed.

I used 120 grit then followed up with 800 or something smooth. I believe about 1/16" came off before feeding was PERFECT, and it is now.

They are great magazines, and maybe I'm fortunate, but in ~20,000 rounds AR15 platform firing I've only had 6 magazine-related malfunctions......4 have been with Pmags as described above.

For hunting they are the best! Much quieter!

My 30 round Pmags have been fantastic, but my experience with a 20 rounder was pretty lousy. It was a pretty common problem for the follower to cant down in the rear when feeding the last rounds in a mag. The bolt traveled over the top of the case jamming it between the bolt and feedramps. I don't see why they haven't updated it with an anti tilt follower. I did however fix all of my problems with it by buying a Magpul anti tilt follower and sanding it down until it fit in the Pmag.

20rd 308Pmags and 30rd 308Pmags are all I use in any of my AR's....I have yet to experience a failure. I would agree with the above....I consider them to be the gold standard of ar mags.

Best part is you can be really hard on them and not incur bent feed lips or even bend the body of the mag.

I have various generations of 20rd and 30 rd 5.56 Pmags. The early gens you could not store the dust cover on the bottom like you can with the newer gens. I also have a couple of the 20rd 308 Pmags and have never had an issue. Once nice thing about Magpul is they are constently updating the design and if you ever have a problem they will take care of you.

I have a few of them and they are all good. I load everything to 2.25max COAL and have no feeding problems. Also they disassemble very easily so they are easy to clean and if you're in Cali that means that they make good rebuild kits/DIY 10 rounders.

I've only used the 5.56 PMAGs, but they've been fantastic every time I've tried them. I find they feel more solid and easier to grip than their metal counterparts as well as having a few unnecessary frills (probably have some application, just not necessary for my needs) like the little clip that covers your rounds while the mag is out of your weapon. Never experienced any FTF or any issues whatsoever with them, and not sure that it matters much to anyone, but they feel more balanced weight-wise than metal ones when you are holding them loaded.

I completely agree with all of the above statements. I have used many different magazines, from many different manufactures, and PMags are what I consider to be the very best there is. It would be a very tough situation for anyone to change my mind.

I have used 30 round .223 mags, with and without windows, with standared floorplates and with ranger floorplates. I have run them in Colt's, Bushmaster's, RRA, Daniel Defense and multiple franken-builds. Never had an issue out of them on any of those platforms. I have also used 20 round .308 mags in a DPMS LR-308 and a LaRue OBR. Again no issues out of these mags. Whether running 5rounds at a time or full loads I have been 100% satisfied. I have traded out about half of my metal mags so far at gun shows and PMAG's are all I run on duty. I ran PMAG's on an 800 round 3 day rifle course and never had a jam outside of ones intentionally induced by Jeff Gonzales during failure drills.

The AR15 20 rounders I bought had a few feeding issues and at least one would let a round partially pop out when inserting into the magwell. No issues with the 30 rounders, but no more PMAG 20s for me. I've never had a malfunction with my Lancer 20 round mags, btw (knock on wood).

I use them all the time for my 223 AR's and 308's and I have never had an issue with jamming. Top notch and I will rely on them in a battle.

Reading "between the lines" on this thread, it seems some have 100 % success with the 20 round PMAG's and some do not, and the same with the 30 round PMAG's. I am not sure why that is so, but it just means I need to test them out first and make sure each one is 100% before I use them in a critical match or situation.

Thanks for the replies. Overall the PMAG's seem to get pretty high marks from most.

I've used 20 and 30 round 5.56 mags, windowed and non windowed and 20 round 7.62 mags with 100% success. Maybe it's my OCD, but pmags are all I buy.

Excuse the typo......meant to say I use 30rd 5.56 and 20rd 308 mags with all my gear. They are great and pretty damn cheap for what you get.


I hope they end up making a 30rd 308 pmag but I'm doubtful bc it would probably weight too much and just be too big. One can hope though.

PMAGs have issues, if you shoot much. I think they are fine for most people's low volume & low rate of fire. I like their products but if you 3 gun or research it, the info is out there. In 3 gun I have seen a higher rate of crazy malfunctions with them. Guys yank them out of their gun & it looks like a porcupine with projectiles sticking out in every direction (which I didn't even know was possible). To be honest, I dont know what mags are infallible. GI mags & C-Products have demonstrated great performance from my perspective & I shoot well beyond recreational capacity. I know Daniel Horner has ran PMAGs in the past (not sure if he still is) & if they were problem prone he wouldn't run them.

One aspect to consider (& I am not sure about the variances out there) it could be variables in extensions. I would assume there is some degree of variance. That would certainly result in a preference for a particular approach angle.....It seems nothing is simple!

I love my Pmags. They have never misfed in a lotta rounds of both semi and burst fire. My only complaint with them is they don't drop free from any of my ARs it my issued M16A4.

After using the aluminum ones in the Army, the PMAGs are definitely a step up. They are the only mags I use for both my AR-15 and GAP-10.

I've never had a problem with 5.56 Pmags holding up to fairly high volume but I'm beginning to like lancer L5 AWM's a lot

Carried them in Asscrackistan and Irash and never had a mag related problem. They feed great and don't have a metallic clang when something hits them. This could be important when on patrol or hunting, or both!!

I've been using P-Mags for several years and have 15 30-rounders and two 20-rounders. I've never had an issue with them. I have no idea how many USGI 30-rounders I have but I've switched out the USGI black or green follower with Magpul followers on around 20 of them, huge improvement for only a few dollars.

Use the 308pmags in my POF and the 30 rounders with ranger plates in my work gun and all my own ARs. beat to hell, they still work. for three years have yet to have a single issue with more then a few of the 223 mags going for a couple thousand rounds each... I wont use anything else for work or play...

Military must think pretty highly of them to ban them and within a month withdraw the ban. Military rarely moves that fast.
I only use 30 round Pmags for shooting my AR. They work and I got them by trading in all my metal mags so it cost me nothing.

I bought a bunch of the 1st gen Pmags back in '07. I loaded one up and parked the left rear tire of my truck on top of it(with the cap on). Left it there while I tried the rest of the mags for fit/function. The one I ran over functioned just fine and I told myself that I'd mark it and keep it separate from the rest; but I never did that. Ended up sending the bodies of the mags back to Magpul when they recalled certain date/codes. Magpul shipped me new bodies free of charge before they'd even received my old ones. If I'm looking for a 30 rounder, I have no reason to get anything other than a Pmag. With more than 50 AR mags floating around, half of them are Pmags.

It took awhile for me to give them a try. I have about 150 metal G.I. mags so I was a little reluctant to buy anymore mags but after trying them I'm sold. They fit and drop free perfectly from all my rifles and have run without a single issue. I don't however spend the extra $$ on the windowed ones..

Great mags. Never had any problems. If you have a LMT MWS make sure you have the modified version of the 20LR mag. Otherwise the bolt may lock out by itself now and then.

The only reason I even own any gi mags is because they came with various ARs that I have bought. I have about 25 PMag 30 rounders and have never had any problems.

I've tested most polymer magazines on the market, and the PMAG is by far the best overall mag. It's reliable, hands down.
Other mags claim to be anti-tilt. Most arent. PMAG is.
Most claim to be proper 30rd mags, but they still don't seat on a closed bolt. PMAG is a 31rd mag that, when filled to 30, seats on a closed bolt EVERY TIME.
PMAGs are easy to disassemble and clean, most others are not that easy. One competitor doesn't disassemble at all.
The Windowed PMAG is better than any other iteration I've see and used. When the rounds go above the edge of the magwell, you still know how much ammo you have in the mag.
To date, thousands and thousands of rounds through PMAGs, and have yet to have a magazine related malfunction.

PMAGs are the best I've ever used. Also good customer support. If you have any original ones that don't work right you can change them in for the new design.

Only problem I have with them is they don't feed my .300 Whisper rounds as well as USGI, but they weren't designed for that and there is a simple mod to fix the problem.

I've only used the 30rd Pmags and had no issues with them. I also use the 20rd and 30rd Thermold mags,(American made, not Canadian) and haven't had any issues with them either. I use the 20rd Thermolds in my 20" AR exclusively for prone and bench shooting.

No problems with them in 223 or 308.

I have also had no problems with the ones that I converted to 5 rd in both calibers to be legal in my state for hunting.

No problems feeding but I have had issues doing mag changes under duress on an open bolt weapon. I'll stick with my usgi mag and swap out the followers.
