Howdy peoples..

i've been trying to work up a load for my .243 [700 vls 9.5tw 26"].. it getting down rite frustrating..
the scope is a 36x weaver-oa .. an i do check the parallax between yard changes
i've been through a number of different powders an different brands & weights of bullets

my last outting i took 10 shots ea. at 1, 2 ,an 300.. i have a tighter group @ 200 yrds then i can get @ 100 yrds an opens @ 300yrds accordingly per 200yrds...
the load i was hoping to use is with 75gr v-max 3031/37.5 actually its been my best load overall
my primers are flat, no craters [wlr] easy bolt lift ..everything is normal

the problem is i can not get a steady POI at 100rds... though i do get at 200/ i'd say 300 too but it was a bit winny.
right now my quest is only to get a steady poi @ 100yrds ...

here is the question... do i go for a heavier bullet or a lighter bullet ? ...or... ?

has anyone experienced this or are .243's that finicky ..
maybe i've overlooked something after 500+ rnds.. an still trying

which way.... ?

Re: POI at 100

I'd start by trying another proven (and lower power) scope.
Changes in POI can be mirage, wind, equipment or the shooter.
I've never seen POI change during one shooting session, with the same load, equipment & conditions, unless the "nut behind the bolt" is doing something wrong. Does this ever happen to you with any other rifle/scope combination? If not, sounds like an equipment issue.

The "200 better than 100" is not unheard of as many quickly twisted, extreme boattails don't "go to sleep" (settle down) until they get downrange a bit. That was true even back in the 1903 Springfield days with the famous 172 gr F.A. boattail.

Good shooting!

Re: POI at 100

Ah.. you make some good points.. the one i think may help is maybe i'll try a flat base bullet.. i've recieved another couple of thought simular to yours about the fast bullet not sleeping also makes good sence quote " i didn't think of that "..
i'll down load the charge in stages an see..
the scope has been proven on another rifle i did have a leupold 6.5~20X40LR on it but i need extra power for a non spotter VHA match in PA hard to see them little holes at 4 & 500yrds, this 243 has not given me satisfactory results since new makes a wonderful hunter
i shot other big bores including a wild cat that shine so its not the nut behind the bolt but maybe the cook behind the recipe although i'm noway an expert .. yet Lol's
well thank you all.. i have something to work with now .. i thought it was a lost cause.. ( rebarrel in 30BR ] an scrap the gun
looking for an happy ending..

Re: POI at 100

Vic me thinks i will try that too.. flat base mite be the ticket along with lesser powder charge i'm about to make another order anyway

when my dad was in the service my mom visited her sister, her husban [ me uncle] had a resteruant there in Knoxville i was 2yrs ole we spent so i was told 6 months there.. so i'm guess'n ya ain't such an ole fart alone.. Lol's

ChadTRG42 'why 3031'.. well cause i didn't have any 4198.. i tried every damn powder i had an 3031 Was the last one
4350 4895 4064 4831sc varget an 748 .. 4350 probably gave me a fair load to hunt with as well as the rest i'd favor 4350 an varget if i had to
