Police Officer Shot and no one helps

I saw this earlier and it pissed me off. A suspect began to fight with an officer and pulled a gun and shot the officer. The suspect temporarily got away. Look at the people in the background going about their business and not helping the officer. You can tell that part of town hates police otherwise someone would have helped. Thank God he is ok.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

Vaq, its a sad statement from humanity. I understand why no one came to help but couldnt give you an answer you could accept.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

I would not say it is a statement of our current culture, morality, or what not. It is, instead, a well known phenomenon called Diffusion of Responsibility .

Basically people will not do anything as they believe someone else will do or has done something. This happens every day and has happened throughout human history. So I don't see it as anything but people being people.

As the saying goes "be the change you wish to see in others".

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

I spent a couple of very interesting nights in East Saint Louis once upon a time....super sketch club call OZ...some very, very interesting individuals, and interesting situations.....a muslim cabby that got lost in da hood, turned down a street with all the street lights out (what we call a clue) only to have several unseen individuals start hurling rocks and bottles at the cab, he was so freaked out that he just mashed the gas without any knowledge of where he was going sending us into an even worse part of the hood while reciting this weird chant (prayer?) and doing the full on madrasa rocking thing in the front seat of the cab...getting that dewd to settle down and understand that he had to drive like he owned the place was a challenge since his english was as bad as my whateverthefuckhespoke....yes, East St. Louis a very interesting shit hole filled with very interesting people...... I am see it hasn't changed a bit.

Good luck

I really dont think thats the problem. Its more like "Im sick of being stopped for "Driving while black" and all the rest of the offences weve all seen, like the thread about the LEOs who shot the black people after Katrina. They have no trust, and no love for police. If youve never lived in a black skin its almost impossible to grasp. Not pretty but understandable from their perspective...Kind of like "You fuck me over every day and you expect me to come help you ...hahahahaha".

I totally disagree with that. This was a black cop and a black criminal. The race card has no bearing on what happened here. It was simply a piece of shit criminal and a bunch of sorry ass people doing nothing to help. At some point you have to take responsibility for yourself and stop blaming other people for your problems.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

Its no longer sad, but downright pathetic as to what drives a persons decision to help a person nowadays. Yeah, cops do bad shit, so do a lot of other people. Its part of the human condition. I have seen enough of these videos, and not all of the victims are cops in them. People stepping over someone that got jacked in the middle of the store, no one doing shit. "I dont wanna get involved" or "cops beat my baby daddy, why should I help?" Any excuse you can come up with is just ignorant and/or pathetic.

For those of you reading this....and there are those like this on this board; I don't know if you were legitimately wronged by LE, or just got a sore vag because a cop told you to put on your seatbelt, maybe mommy and/or daddy taught you to dislike the police, or it could be your just an asshole, but if you look the other way when a person (cop or not) is in a situation like this, and you choose not to help, you are just as bad, if not worse than the person commiting these crimes. This here, is the truth, even though some may not find it acceptable.

This pretty much sums it up. As much as the media and everyone else wants to find the easy answer, i.e. RACE, its really deeper then that. Its not just about color of skin, its about the lack of responsibility that continues to grow in our current society. Nowadays nothing is YOUR fault, rather its someone elses. IF you drive drunk, its not your fault, its the asshole cop that stopped you. If you are fired from your job for stealing, its not your fault, its the asshole companies fault for not paying you enough. So on and so on.

The only way we are going to change this is to start holding people accountable for their actions and not buying into the excuse based mentality, whatever the excuse may be.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

These people are indoctrinated at a young age to dislike police, people of authority and any moral standings.

Just got listen to a few rap albums and wonder why inner-city folk commonly shoot each other up and do nothing to change their situation when it's so much easier to blame the white man, LEO and elected officials.

Way to stay classy there, ghetto.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

Desertrat you nailed this excuse right on the head. As a interesting statement made above. Am I to understand people can be judged by the clothes they wear "police uniform" or the color of their skin because someone else who looked like them has done wrong to you in same clothes? It is interesting the double standard. These people don't want to be judged this way but it is perfectly acceptable for them to judge others this way.

I can tell you for me I would of helped the officer in a second. However, the hesitation for many, including myself, has to do with somebody worse than the criminal and that's the POS lawyer or liberal DA that will defend the criminal and say that I violated that scumbags rights and attempt to sue or incarcerate me. How an attorney can sleep at night that would defend such a piece of excrement is beyond comprehension, logic and human decency.

Have an iron clad Good Samaritan Law protecting non-LEO's that go after criminals caught in the act of a felony both civil and criminally, coupled with shall issue ccw's nationwide policy, I bet $5 you'd see a reduction in crime overnight.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

Im so tired of "the hood". It and everything in it is worthless! Wish all "hoods" were cut off from the outside world and eventually they would just kill themselves off.

Don't make this about race either, there's plenty of whites and Hispanics that live in the hood. It's a state of mind they embrace and they are all worthless.

No, they just dont trust police.

And it is not just race, but an economic condition they find themselves in at least partially because of their color. Again, Im not necessarilly condoneing anything, but talk to a black person...ask them some real questions and you might get a swake up call. I grew up with a bunch of black buddies, and the first home I owned I was the only white face in the neighborhood. They were fine people andd welcomed me as family...but I learned a lot about the insiduous nature of their problem. Its one thing to talk about it from a white perspective, another to experience it from a black skin.

Dont paint me as a liberal fucktard, In this case I know what Im talking about.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

It's always somebody else's fault isn't it?

Strange. I spent 6 years in the Army and served with and worked for many black soldiers, NCO's and Officers. None of them seemed any more "held down" than I and any of them are more than welcome at my dinner table any time.

I've been in LE for 14 years now. Many of my coworkers, more than half of my superiors and some officers I'm closest with are black and they don't seem to be held to any particular economic condition because of their color.

Seems to me that this is the USA. Anyone who chooses to pull their head out of their ass early enough can make a pretty decent living if their willing to work for it. Those who <span style="font-style: italic">choose</span> not to are never short on excuses.

Nonsense and if you actually believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you. They hate each other more than anything and to find evidence of that you needn't look any further than in their music in which they glorify gangs, violence and the degradation of women. They kill each other in droves everyday but its only an issue when its a police involved shooting against one of them. They rape, rob, burglarize and pillage their own. Their mantra, "STOP SNITCHING" speaks volumes about their culture and values.

Keep thinking you know.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

It's not a race thing, it's all of society. The poorest example I have ever lived through was the death of my friend from a heart attack. He was teaching me golf, and how to surf longboard, and I was teaching him how to shoot. We both were training for a marathon. He had a heart attack. Our female partner ran a half mile to teh fire station, and as I was doing CPR, adn screaming at someone to stop and help, or at least call 911, they all just drove slowly by and looked, then drove away. I was hurt/pissed/viciously angry/hurt and wanted my friend to get his ass back and those fucks to just die. Each and every one of those assholes going to work, watching their fucking neighbors, one dieing, the other trying to savve him, just made me hate the entore part of Hawaii Kai Oahu...for a long time. There is a large part of me that feels fortunate to teh TBI issue and memory loss because that stuff no longer bursn as it did for so long.

This is the sickening trend of our society. The days of folks like us who are good samaritans are mostly gone in favor of the enema nozzle with a phone You Tubing the events. Me, I refuse to ever be a part of that society an dwill always give me best to assist someone in dire need. I even pull over for folks on the road because, well, it's what I do. I challenge all to not only do what they can when tehy can, but to challenge your friends to do the same. We know damn well that we are the country's good people and we do just things and help folks when help is needed.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

It's a cultural issue not a racial issue. The Racists are irrelevant as their theories are horse shit. The culture of licentiousness, indolence, the perpetual juveniles passing for adult males, and the unadulterated numbers that prove that the crime perpetrated by Blacks against other blacks is enormously disproportionate to any other population.

It has been cultivated by cheap, third rate politicians who simply have nothing other than hustling and absurd sloganeering to get elected and maintain their gigs once they get them.

The 'Racist' canard is a myth. It is 2012 not 1912 or 1962. The bullshit that drove the Phil Donahue show was lame thirty years ago. It hasn't somehow become true now.

Life is too short for bullshit: The savagery we witness on a daily business is so embarrassing that there is a desperate effort to distract from the obvious and verifiable truth of the cause. It's tough being around racists, to be sure. That said, one may just as well blame cactus pollen or poorly sanded hardwood flooring for the shocking crime problem as they are equally irrelevant to the real issue: Self centered, narcissistic, anything for a buck, fuck you it's mine,... you get the idea.

Really?

OK, do this.

List all of the scholarship and employment opportunities ACTIVELY seeking minority applicants.

Then look for similar programs that are open for middle class white kids.

If you are a inner-city minority you pretty much have a blank check to get as much education as you want. If one or both of your parents are in jail....even more so. If you are arrested as a juvenile you have a TON of programs aimed right at you.

MY DEPARTMENT actively seeks minority applicants. Little things like hiring clinics at inner-city churches and community centers where recruiters will tell you everything you need to know to pass the exams and boards. They don't do that in the 'burbs.

The reality is that no matter how much money you throw at the inner-city you can't change it from the outside and the dirty little secret is the most popular "community leaders" don't want it to change because then they wouldn't have anything to rally against!

+1 ... The only way I would of been able to get a university scholarship (with 4.0 GPA) was if I somehow turned black, Hispanic or native american.. Then I would of had a full ride no questions asked, but since I was white with middle class parents I payed in full. I guess someones gotta pay for all the full rides.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

Ya'll think that's bad. Up here in Canuckia, there are certain 'departments', classes, organizations, and most importantly "help venues" that are open ONLY to a certain (major) minority.

All others pay through the nose, find your own way, stick it out, earn your grades, and do it solo.

How's that for a concept, eh?

Not to mention the 'consolation prizes' of certain trades tickets and/or degree's because the quota has been 'legislated' for certain demography's and tribal treatise's. Made me sick then, and makes me even more sick now. In the end, we're paying for at least two, when we pay for our own enrollment.

I saw this myself at College, Apprenticeship School, and BOTH Universities that I attended. Pathetically ridiculous.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

I helped a Denver PD officer 18 years ago.
I pulled into the lot of a 7-11 and a big guy had the officer down knocking the shit out of him. I didn't know the circumstances but grabbed a big rock and hit the thug on the head. Once slowed him down but didn't knock him out and he started to come at me so I smacked him again and down he went.
I was helping the officer then and he was thanking me for helping him when more police showed up and 2 ambulances, on for the cop and one for the thug. 2 of the officers grabbed me, twisted my arm up behind me as I was kneeling next to the down officer that was telling me thank you, jerked me to my feet, handcuffed me and threw me in the back of a cruiser.
I was telling them I was helping the officer and was told to shut up.
They took me to jail, charged me with assault on a Police Officer and put me in an interrogation room and left me there for four hours before anyone said a word to me.
When they finally came to talk to me I asked them if they had talked to the officer, my wife or any other witnesses? They said they had so I told them what had happened.
I was told,"We don't think that is what happened, now tell us the truth."
I was amazed, the Officer, my wife and two other witnesses and they think I was after the cop?
I told them I was done talking and asked for my lawyer.
I got my call and called my wife at my brothers house. She said the lawyer was on his way[from western Neb. the lawyer for our farm.]
They threw me in a cell, literally, and told me what they thought of scumbags that assault the Police.
Six hours later they released me to my lawyer and said it was all a big misunderstanding, shift change and anything else they could dream up. We sure are sorry this happened.
I told them not to talk to me, talk only to my lawyer and made sure he had cards for all involved, cops, jail personel etc. and to expect a law suit and an article in the paper. I did thank them for the peanut butter sandwich on stale bread that I didn't eat.
My next stop was the hospital to see the Office I helped. The lawyer asked him if he could tape the conversation and I asked him how he felt. "Pretty rough and thank you for your help."
The lawyer them had me go through my story and when I was done asked the Officer if that was how it happened. He answered yes.
I then told him what they did to me. He said he told the other officers that I had helped before they took him to the hospital and said no more. He sent me a nice letter a few days later.
My next stop was The Rocky Mountain News where I told my story to a reporter then went home and left it in my lawyers hands.
Denver PD settled out of court. They paid a bunch to me and my lawyer too.
Would I help a cop in trouble now? I probably would but would be hesitant, probably only if I thought he was in danger of being killed and as old as I am now I would probably have to shoot in order to get it done so I really am not sure.
I hope I am never faced with the problem again.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

So, you did the right thing. Despite the warm thanks the PD gave you, after speaking to the officer, do you regret doing it?

If you feel regret, think of what it would have felt like if you just stood there and watched that person beat the cop to death. I dont know you from Adam, so I dont know what kind of morals or ethics you have. But I would rather take what you went through, than live with the fact I watched the assault and/or murder of a person, let alone a police officer, and did nothing to stop it.

But what do I know. I'm just an asshole.

The reality is that no matter how much money you throw at the inner-city you can't change it from the outside and the dirty little secret is the most popular "community leaders" don't want it to change because then they wouldn't have anything to rally against!</div></div>

+1 ... The only way I would of been able to get a university scholarship (with 4.0 GPA) was if I somehow turned black, Hispanic or native american.. Then I would of had a full ride no questions asked, but since I was white with middle class parents I payed in full. I guess someones gotta pay for all the full rides.</div></div>

Completely understand. IIRC in my major and concentration (biological sciences/pre-med) Caucasian males pre-reqs are held higher than they're african american counter parts. All in all it's harder for me to get into UM per say than my black friend.

Alot of people around here are pretty racist. I'm not, i just can't stand people that don't work, are uneducated, and get gov't benefits for siting on their asses all day. Which around here just so happens to be majority black. Also people that drive a absolute POS car with shiny 22s on them that shit drives me insane, also something around here you don't see whites doing, there are a couple here and there but mainly black.

As to the story posted above as said regardless of race, culture, beliefs, etc. if you can watch a man in the mist of dying and not give a damn about helping him...well there is just something wrong there. As said i for one couldn't just sit there and watch the man bleed.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

In the UK, it becomes a criminal act if you fail to respond to an Officer's request for help. Not quite the same as helping an Officer in distress but still a good and clear law.

In NYC, if you help an Officer upon request you are automatically entitled to the same protection/resources and support an Officer would be entitled to after say a shooting (ironic that in NYC they want you to help but don't turn up to that fight armed with anything more than a toothbrush). Both these laws are heading in the right direction in my view but it may, unfortunately, take more of the above to occur before the issue is fully addressed.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

We have pretty much the same laws here.

If I "order" you to help then you can be charged if you do not and you are indemnified if you do.

However I don't know that it has been tested in court and I also don't know if there has been any lawsuits against it. How can I require you to jump into a physical altercation if I don't know what your ability and level of training is? If I require you by law to assist and you are injured, doesn't that make me responsible?

This is why most of us will not order someone to assist. In fact I have asked in the past that someone just stand by, be a witness and direct responding officers to where I have the guy pinned to the ground. The last time was because I did not want responding officers to mistake the good citizens intentions.

Some earlier posts smell of "Stockholm Syndrome."

And then we have actual experiences...

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Strange. I spent 6 years in the Army and served with and worked for many black soldiers, NCO's and Officers. None of them seemed any more "held down" than I and any of them are more than welcome at my dinner table any time.</div></div>

There are those who take advantage of opportunities and those who take advantage of the system.

Foul Mike, do you think it would have gone down the same if you were a white guy?

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

desertrat, I have the morals of someone who was drafted in 68 and went and did a year in the infantry in RVN.
I have the ethics that made me not hesitate to jump into that mess.
As I said in the last of my post, I am rather old now and physically I think I would have to shoot them. I have shot enough already and God only knows what kind of problems that would bring on. I have enough problems with that now.
Maggot, I am white but at the time I was a long haired hippie type looking person.
The whole incident did nothing for my trust in LE, among other things. I do not trust them.
The way things are now with the problems I have from RVN and our legal system being how it is, I would be hesitant but would probably bust a cap or two and go to prison. I am not sure.
If it were just helping a downed officer, I would make sure someone else was there to back me up then render aid as best I could.
Also as I posted before, I hope I am never in that kind of situation again.

Understood, bro.

Re: Police Officer Shot and no one helps

Pretty typical behavior for the ghetto. People out there aren't raised to be upstanding citizens, so letting a guy possibly die without helping is probably ok by their way of thinking.

Glad I don't live in that type of neighborhood where people are that selfish.
