Poor man’s AI picture thread (AICS)

And they both shoot as good as my AI AXSR at half the price 😉

Isn´t that a AICS1.5 Folding Chassis? Looks like an amazing setup, though! I´d really like to see it assambled (y)
Though there are occasional odd balls, the legacy AICS chassis (and corresponding AW rifles the AICS chassis was based on) numbering is as follows:

1.0 = fixed (non folding) stock and fixed cheek (hump molded in the rear skins)
1.5 = fixed stock and adjustable cheek piece
2.0 = folding stock and adjustable cheek piece

Though I have seen pics of an AWM 2.0 that had rear skins with the fixed cheek molded in still. 🤷🏻‍♂️🙃

-AICS 2.0 SA, 6.5CM
-G prefix R700 action with M16 extractor
-20” M40 contour Bartlein
-Geissele Super 700 two stage trigger
-Badger rail
-Badger rings
-Badger IMUNS
-Leupold MK5
-Otter creek PR65L
-Sawtooth Rifles Arca

Does anyone regret this type of move with an r700?

I know that sounds crazy, right. I have a r700 LA in a McMillan A5a, and I have this undying urge to change it.

I was just going to paint it; its molded in desert/sand camo from McM, i live in ME, we have no desert. I just can't bring myself to paint a molded in camo.

Always like the AI setups; still too poor for a $7k+ weapon system, when I've yet to acquire all the NV goodies. So I've been considering trading off, or just plain swapping out the McMillan to satisfy this itch.

Am I way off? Am I likely to see no change in the rifle, other than the look and maybe a folder? The rifle shoots great as is, so I'm not desperate for improvement there. Cost seems reasonably close to a McMillan or Manners setup; maybe slightly higher.

Since 2004, it’s the only chassis I’ve used for bolt guns. Here’s my very first one, an AICS 1.5 purchased from Impact Guns, a company that probably doesn’t exsist anymore. I think it was less than $500 and came with one five round magazine. Later, Sniper Country PX sold them, and by 2006 or 07, you could buy them from Midway USA. In those days a 2.0 was $850 or so, MSRP.

It was the hot lick in 2003-05, but then it fell out of favor with the cool kids and guys began selling them.

In those days, Tac Pro shooting in Mingus Texas was the US distributor for AI and it was the only place that had 10 round magazines.

I still have the skins for this thing, although the 1.5 skeleton wss converted to a 2.0 years ago.

And there’s a giant wooden deck in my backyard where this plastic table was.

Edited to add: picture was probably taken with a second generation digital camera that looked like a yellow camera.

The frame is welded. I’ll take her apart and share some photos. I actually have a 2.0 that is the same (fully swept back bolt handle notch and welded frame). Did not think the 2.0 folders were released that early on to have those characteristics…
Probably a 2.0 UK model that made it over here.

I’m a stock type of guy so this is a complete personal opinion here. I’m not a fan boy of:
-the attachment system. It’s great and a solid system I just prefer mlok. I hate paying AI prices or rails and such.
-weight compared to my McMillan and manners stocks
-the grip. Don’t care for the feel, angle or shape. The SR and the ATX did fix this.
-have a Surgeon CSR (straight bolt handle) the handle made contact with the chassis and had to be relieved.

What I do like:
-the adjustability, size and shape of the whole system was very well thought out.
-it’s solid and built like a tank
-no need for bedding or dbm. Never Mounted an action in one that wasn’t perfectly straight
-the support (though expensive) there’s parts and pieces everywhere. All kinds of configuration possibilities
-looks cool AF
-it folds

Thank you for that. Folder is/was definitely part of my thought process. My 300wm has a 26" barrel, so it fits in nothing. As much as I like it, I think a KRG would be a step back from my A5a, just to get the folder. I'm not versed enough in the product to know how correct that statement is.

I tried krg too and run one pretty successfully in prs for a season then sold it off. Again I’m more of a stock type of guy. With that I hated shooting anything other than short action calibers. It wasn’t until I shot the m2010 (300wm in a chassis) that I started coming around. A buddy of mine has a Remington 30-06 in a post 14 AIAX chassis and it’s nice to shoot. If it weren’t for the weight of the chassis I’d put my Bergara 300wm in an AIAX.

Banging shots prone or from a bench I’d probably go that route but don’t want to pack that through the woods and mountains, ya know?
