Rocketing prices of lithium - the crucial ingredient in making electric car batteries - are threatening the very idea of EVs becoming the next automobiles.
“As Elon Musk has said, “lithium will be the limiting factor,” Joe Lowry, an expert on the global lithium market and the founder of Global Lithium LLC, told Al Jazeera.
In April prices hit $78,000 a ton, and the Tesla CEO argued it might be necessary for the EV industry itself to start mining and refining lithium in order to combat “insane” cost increases that have leapt over 600% this year.
While around 60% of the world’s known lithium supplies are found in Argentina, Chile and Bolivia, China remains the 4th largest producer despite having just 7% of global reserves.
