Taught how to teach? I really don't understand that.
I am not busting on your chops, I really am interested. I would bet there are quite a few of us that have taught something gun related to someone else.
I work with quite a few new shooters, and I just find it natural (perhaps that is where I am screwing up) lean into the rifle, don't have a sway back. Look at almost any "new" female shooter and you will see the shoulders over their heals. Pull the rifle in tight to your shoulder but don't strain, just pull it there nice and firm, one foot in front of the other.....you likely know the rest.
Same with riding a bike, driving a fork lift, manual transmission, fly a plane.....it is just natural. (so many things popped into my head with that for my story thread)
I don't understand teaching how to teach. It might also be a bit about me as well, being dyslexic made math real hard and frustrated teachers. ADHD makes taking tests real hard. I tend to read what I want to read. Why did the chicken not cross the road. To get to the other side, Wrong. Now if you say it to me a different answer. That frustrated teachers.

Watch the entire thing, there is a video where they go over the.....discussion.....and how smart he is in answering the questions the way he does. See if I can find it. Great video to watch. If you think of anyone that has rational "talks" with people if you agree with them or not, it is the way to get your point across. Make them see the error themselves just like he did here.

I found the video of the person that goes into the Peterson video, it is quite well done but I don't agree with his assessment on the "got ya".
Yes it does make her feel silly and wrong, but with the people on that side of this argument you need to hit that nail hard on the head to drive it home. That "got ya" is what is going to stick in her. It will make her angry that she "lost" this discussion, and that loss is something she is going to work very hard to not make again.....so she will research more and more, and by doing that she must go direct to the source, she must find him saying things concrete things she can "attack" again next time, and by doing that she will learn that what she is doing is exactly what she is accusing him of.

I am also dyslexic and during my fifth year in high school, and 14 year in school (not counting a brief time in kindergarten where I dropped out, Literally!) I learned how to study. It was quite a trip being the stupidest person in high school and to become what most calling me a genius in college (and a math wiz in one job where I was required to determine salaries and manage the moneys for an entire population of high functioning MR’s, many of whom held regular jobs.) As said, its been quite a trip for the last 74 years. OH, I was tested in the 3rd grade for mental retardation because my grades were so poor.
How they teach you to teach? Well its kind a simple. We were given volumes and volumes of reading information. Reminds you of a spending bill in congress. It was supposed to teach us how to instruct mentally retarded children how to learn.
The instruction in classes contained pretty decent information for folks who never had experience with the issues caused by developmental disabilities. It basically outlined the steps of teaching. Having done a lot of teaching, written programs to change behaviors, and help people learn new skills, and above all else, trained horses, I was very well versed in how to make positive things happen and people achieve goals. So, most of this was jsut a review of what I already knew.
How to teach? The very best primer, I have ever seen was written by Joe Webb. The Book, ”The Care and Training of the Tennessee Walking Horse”. Old Joe, had no clue that he was creating the basis for modern behavior modification programs.
So, its demonstration, practice, repetition, and reward for positive results. Punishment has no part in this.
Want to do the job right? Make it fun. If learning is not fun, its just rote memorization. I presented a paper to the Louisiana Special Education Teacher’s meeting in 2008. During that meeting I illustrated how this worked. First, during the presentation I asked if anyone could tell me what the Pendleton Act was. Not one answer. Next, I asked a coworker who was with me who was an avid turkey hunter to quote the Louisiana regulations regarding turkey hunting (a drier discourse would be hard to find). Yep, he could quote it book and verse. It was something he enjoyed so he knew every aspect of it.
The Pendleton Act, also known as the Hatch Act? Establishes Civil Service where appointments are made, not by political favor, but my merit. It also established the political protection to appointees but also established the limitations Civil Servants could participate in political campaigns. (Something that seemingly has been lost in today’s Washington DC) Every person in that room was a professional educator and every person in that room had taken several American History courses and in each and everyone of those classed the Pendleton Act was taught. (And each and everyone of us, has interacted with or been directly affected by the Pendleton Act.)
I am not sure this answers your question. But two teaching points to remember,
1. Lots of short, regular repetitions
(short is the key word)
2. Make it fun
(Even the driest subject can be made fun with effort.)

I agree it needs to be fun, and I really think if you think it is really fantastic the people you are trying to instruct will also find it interesting. Perhaps that is why "we" non professional teachers, guns, body work, welding, guitar.......can do it, we love it so and want others to enjoy what we ourselves enjoy.
