I am going to order a forster co ax press and am wanting suggestions on a powder measurer. I plan to use varget so does one measurer work better with the tubular varget powder?

Re: powder measurer suggestions

There are many good meters out there. Manual, or auto? I have owned the Redding, and Harrells. Both are great. I do have an RCBS Chargemaster and like it. I'd go manual for your first measure. JPG

Re: powder measurer suggestions

I know people will laugh but I still use the old Belding and Mull powder measure. I had one of the high doller RCBS (or Redding, I can't remember) competition models and it wasn't as accurate as the B&M. I sold the RCBS and use the B&M exclusively. It's small, simple and super accurate. And yes I use it with Varget with no problems.

Re: powder measurer suggestions

If you're using Varget or any other stick powder, I don't think a powder measure is the way to go. Ball powders, I think, work pretty well with a thrower but not extruded powders like Varget.

I use an RCBS chargemaster for Varget and RL-15, IMR4064, etc and its the shit!

Re: powder measurer suggestions

With practice my Harrell's Premium throws +/- .1 of a grain. Most of the powders I use are IMR extruded type powders. No matter what powder measure you use, you are going to cut a kernel every now and then. With patience and practice you can get really close with it. I usually just throw my charges I'm going to be shooting out to 300 yards. At 400 to 1K I throw a little light and trickle to the exact weight I want.

Good luck getting the answer you want.

I think I will go with the chargemaster then since most of my loads 308 and 223 I plan on using varget. I thank everyone for their advice

Re: powder measurer suggestions

+1 chargemaster... use it once and you will turn lazy like the rest of us

I used to get a sore back loading about 200 or so rounds using the 5-0-5 and uniflow, but the chargemaster is great makes the task a little less brainless

You can't go wrong there IMO. I have the Harrel's and the chargemaster. The Harrel's was fine when I shot Garands a lot but it cuts powder and if you are going for accuracy, it is slow and there is a learning curve. It's not tough but you do have to be consistent.

With the Charge master, you turn it on, calibrate it, tell it your charge weight and hit dispense. It's accurate to a tenth of a grain and does not cut powder. You will have the occasional over charge but not often. You can even stick short piece of straw from McD's in the end of the tube to help the over charge problem. Then you are probably going to want to speed it up a little. Do a quick search here on SH, "reprogramming Chargemaster" It's also simple and it works.

The other advantage with it over a manual measure is that while you are waiting for the charge, you can be seating the bullet on the last one. Once you tell it to dispense, it keeps dispensing automatically until you hit cancel. So it's doing it's thing and you are seating bullets = faster.

Good luck!

The only thing that I think could be better than a Chargemaster is two. I need an anealer, Stainless media and tumbler, a crony and then a second Chargemaster. You got to have prioities.

Re: powder measurer suggestions

Harrell measure is the way to go. I ordered mine directly from Harrell. He sent it to me and said if i liked it send him a check and if i didnt like it send him back the measure.
