Hunting & Fishing Prarie dog hunting? anyone know a place?

Me and some sniper buddies are trying to get together a prairie dog hunt. We've built up some reputable rimfires and now are in the stage of looking for a place. I think we are trying to find a place in South Dakota or North Dakota, (preferably South). We are from Wisconsin so it would be nice if it was within driving distance.

Does anyone know of a decent public place in south Dakota? I think it would be me, my brother, another sniper buddy and 2 friends.

Key concerns are keeping it in the Dakotas and finding a place with a large enough colony. We are all gonna be running 22 mags and I thought it would be enough if we all brought 1000 rounds of CCI maxi mags... for 2 days of shooting.

Let me know if my logic is off.

Thanks all

Check out the rose bud reservation, it will take about 12 hours to get there. Stay in valentine, NB or Some of the ranchers have bread and breakfasts.

Around mobridge there are alot of towns just have to ask and most ranchers will let you shoot all you want. you might want to bring some bigger fire power as the wind tends to blow about every day and the little bastards get smart and will stay a couple hundred plus yards from you after a few shots.

depends where your at, some towns dont see any hunters and there stupid and will stay out it all depends on hunting pressure. A good time to go is in june after they drop there litters and again in august.

Re: Prarie dog hunting? anyone know a place?

Well I feel stupid because I cant remember the exact date, but the South Dakota state ground is closed for pd shooting for awhile. I think it opens back up in mid June. But the grass lands look like a giant camp ground for a few weeks after it opens. I'll check on the date if I remember. You can still shoot on private ground, but everyone wants a little cash.
!!!! I would avoid the Lower Brule Res, there are some good towns there but the licnese is $140.00 now. The Game wardens are shit, and every ranch is going to try and get some cash from you even though by Res law they cant.

Re: Prarie dog hunting? anyone know a place?

i think it is 40 dollars or some thing for a tag on standing rock up here by mobridge and alot of the guys i know just want you to ask and they will tell you where there cows are and to shoot all of those little bastards that you can. I would call the chamber in moberidge they might be able to give more details on everything but they are out saturday night we made some pink mist out by my brother in laws.

Major PD towns in wyoming too. no license required there.
One has to see a 1 or 3 mile long town to believe it - i have no words to adequately discribe it. last year my son and I went thru 1,500 rds of 223 for 3 days of shooting.

Rosebud Rez, maybe the prarie dog capital of the U.S... it borders our ranch, we own over 10K but have access to over 20K acres... I drop the god hammer on pdiggers any chance i get, very tough to get to where i shoot, i usually access it with my 800 ranger EFI, to top it off alot of em got the plague about two yrs ago, some towns are dead, others are still there, i do some guided hunts i will see how the towns are doing this summer and keep an update.
