Back around Christmas time, I found this old 1959 on the used rack in Maine. It was already chopped up with a Mcgowen barrel and cheap synthetic stock. I just had to rescue it.

This is what I turned it in to. Mark Chanlynn barreled it in 6.5x55. I found the stock on eBay that a guy had never used. Not the fondest of the color, but it was way under the price of a new one. Still to be done: Cera-kote, Farrel 20 MOA base, and a Nightforce. Jeff at CDI said he would do a bottom metal for it. Hopefully I did it justice.

I don't think I'd chop an original '51 like this, well sorta original. I bought it as a barreled action and found the stock. This may become a Vietnam era sniper.

You can't go wrong with that action. Butter smooth, tight lockup. Strong as a safe. That's a good 'era' for a Win 70, too. They knew what they were doing, for sure.

Congrats... you have a build there that will make anyone stand up and take notice.

Cheers and post some group pictures for us when you get an optic on it.

Mike Bush at Underground Skunkworks has my '54 pre-64 action right now....going into an adjustable HTG (forest camo) with Williams bottom metal and a Bartlein tube in Mikes recon contour.

Should be any day now, I cant wait. And if CDI makes bottom metal for it, Im all over it....though he told me recently he had no such plans unfortunately.

no clue on the maker ..the only name I've found is pachmayr on the recoil pad. the brown was actually a paint. it has a camp finish underneath.

I really like that classic rifle!

I found a pre-war match rifle conversion (so really no collector value) that I have been keeping for a 'someday' 6.5x55 project build.

I later found a 70 Classic 6.5x55, so the pre-war project keeps getting pushed off. Your pictures have me thinking again...

+1
Good choice of cartridge and action.

Re: Pre-64 Win. 70 tactical build

I got the 6.5x55 bug when I picked up a M96B last fall at a local gun show. The dang thing shoots just over an inch at 100 yards albeit 6 inches high with Remington Core-lokt ammo. Not too shabby for a 112 yr old gun with open sights. Since we're on a Model 70 kick how about the Model 70s proud daddy. Here is a first year 1925 Model 54 in '06 that I just bought as an early birthday present to myself.
