Preferred courier - UPS, FedEx, or USPS?

2 images for my impression of the USPS. I do my absolute hardest to go UPS or FedEx (FedEx preferred). I'll pay, just keep it out of the USPS' hands, PLEASE!

PLEASE!!!

Not a firearm but I've had it take 16 days for a package to go from Midway to my house which is two hours away. Last ordeal was a package shipped from Texas, made it to st louis and was rerouted back to the guy that shipped it. No explanation on that one. Fuck usps

Yep, same thing here! I had a guy send me something from Dallas, Texas where he lives. I am very near Austin (3 hour drive). It went all the way to Seattle and then to me. WTF? The box also looked like it had seen better days by the time I received it - 2 weeks later. That's just one of the dozens (no exaggeration there) of incidents I have had with them. Stuff just sitting around or not moving for 4 or 5 days, that is if the tracking even works. Worst tracking system known to man.

They do fine with letters and such. You give those fucks a box and they lose their common sense for some reason.

If it’s going in a box look into instapak expanding foam packs. I just shipped out a chassis last week and it went UPS as I have terrible luck with usps and fedex locally.

I’ve always used UPS with insurance and tracking with sign on delivery. Never had any problems. But I also video record myself packing my rifle into bubble wrap putting it in a plastic gun case with foam blocks around it so it doesn’t slide in the case. Wrap strapping tape around the box in three locations and zip tie the padlock holes. Snap one more picture of the package in the box with shipping tag and today’s newspaper on it and off it goes. (y)
Only joking... about the video.

When my UPS driver retired local service suffered greatly. I've been with FedEx now for 10+ years and one move. My driver and I swapped cell #'s to make life easier for all involved. UPS drivers just drop and run. Even when they see me inside the shop working. I guess turd brown is the uniform of the day.
Minimizing damage is on the shipper. Nothing and I mean nothing should be able to move when packed correctly. I use a lot of foam insulation board for partitions, padding, fillers etc.
USPS well they're a nonprofit organization what do you expect.

That non profit organization delivers alot of FedEx and UPS packages.

For sure!!! I'm still pissed about the barrel USPS "lost".........and yes it was packed well. I'm still convinced it was stolen.

Yeah man I feel really bad about that. I submitted the claim and had it denied with the reason of no insurance was purchased. The person who processed the claim apparently entered the tracking number incorrectly. I submitted the original receipt which clearly showed the insurance purchase but I suppose that doesn’t matter. I have an appeal in with them now pointing out the error. I have tried to call several times only to have a wait time of 45 minutes to several hours. Customer service is nonexistent...

I wouldn't call I would drive in and show them your receipt with proof of insurance so they can make a copy of it and get the tracking correct.

I've been shipping machineguns, other NFA and expensive rifles for about 20 years now. All of the shipping companies have the occasional flub. Some problems are regional and others systematic. I used to ship FedEx overnight on anything worth more than $1K but since they've decided we shouldn't be allowed to own guns I don't use them anymore unless the customer demands it. They've been pretty good but there has been the occasional problem too. I have had a lot of trouble with UPS here in my area. Drivers dropping off packages on my shop porch when I'm not here and signing them off. I've had a couple shipments damaged by weather and they refused to pay the insurance claiming it was my fault the driver signed the book and left the package outside in the weather. I know there are plastic bags in the delivery vehicle so why leave cardboard out in the rain? I actually caught the FedEx driver bagging a package the UPS driver dumped on my porch. Calls to UPS went nowhere....they never wanted a location or tracking number from me so how could they do anything about the problem with our local driver? The local office had no one who would talk to me about it either. For that reason I won't use ups to ship anything anywhere. That and of course the last new rule they posted about not insuring any machineguns being shipped. I guess that didn't matter though, they never paid the insurance claims on any of the other losses I know of either. Why pay them to insure when they won't abide by their own rules.
I've been using US Post registered mail for a long time to ship very expensive stuff. Its not fast, its not cheap but I've never had a package not make it and the one time there was damage the insurance paid off. Every time the package changes hands it has to be signed for and when it stops somewhere for any reason it goes in a vault or safe. That of course makes it take more time but I'd rather a safe week than a wet soggy day. So far they've been the most reliable and I'll stick with them for the stuff that I want to get where its going.

As with all things, everyone has different experience and as noted earlier your area may have issues with one or more of the shippers.
I try to hand deliver anything worth more than about $30K and within 600 miles or so. USPS takes the rest.

I know and I'll bet they're losing money doing it. Another example of our tax dollars supporting an outdated nbloated organization. I live in a county of 13,000. We have 7 USPS offices. We have two grocery stores. Go figure.

Dave
What Tax Dollars? Another common myth.

And on the saggy packages the big three don't reliably supply the bags.
Generally the carrier's supply there own bags and dog treats with there Christmas tip money. I have never seen a supplied bag that would fit a gun sized package.

Lynn,
They may not be getting any right now but they've been working on our funding for several years now along with taking on debt. In 2017 they lost 2.7 billion $$$$. In 2018 it was a 1.2 billion dollar loss. Losing money and taking on more debt. Guess who'll be on the hook for that debt one day?
11 straight years of losses. We have a post office for every 1857 residence. That's insane.

The post office has to fund the employees retirement plan for 75 years out. That means people who haven't even been born yet are prefunded for future work. No other business has ever done that and it put the postal service billions upon billions in the red which gets factored into each years report.
They won't get back to even for another 6 years even with the 5 cent increase on stamps.
