I am reviewing options for a prefit barrel for an Archimedes. I want to have wrench flats added to the barrel to use when assembling the barrel to the action.

What is the smallest barrel profile (or diameter at the muzzle) that will allow the addition of wrench flats?

Can wrench flats be added to a carbon fiber barrel?

The rule for wrench flats is the same as the rule for muzzle threads - keep at minimum 0.1” extra meat on the radius around the bore itself, magnums get ~0.15”, and more than ~0.1” extra meat (actually, ~14%, but it’s close enough for flat sizes we’d consider) on the diameter between the flats spacing and the barrel OD at the flats. This ensures that you won’t have weird issues at the bore (as much) and that you won’t just spin the wrench off of the flats.

So, with a 0.308 groove diameter, call that a 0.5” wrench flats for 308/30-06 or 0.6” (0.625 to make it easy) for 300WM, with a required diameter of 0.6” or 0.7(25)” respectively for the barrel at the wrench flats midline.
