I have a Hornady powder dispenser I'm getting ready to use, the manual type, and I'm wondering how I should prep it.

I recall reading somewhere that I should run some dry graphite lube through it a few times before using powder in it. What lube should I use, and where would I get it (if it's not something that can easily be found at Midway/Brownell's/Home Depot)?

Re: Prepping Powder Dispenser

I've heard the LUBE thing before, I don't get that. Lube would mean sticky to powder.
I would spray static cling spray, or wipe with dryer sheets to eliminate static buildup.
Other than that it should be ready to rock.

Re: Prepping Powder Dispenser

I'd just wipe everything down with alcohol wipes to take all the grease and oil off of it, no lube at all unless it feels like it's hanging up somewhere, but it shouldn't do that...

Not wet lube, I think dry powder lubricant was the intended type of lube for this application.

I'll run some powder through the dispenser and see what happens first. Dryer sheets seems like an easier alternative than getting lube in that I'd only use once.

No, Neo, No...only REALLY dry lube. Powdered graphite if you must. Actually, most smokeless powders already have some graphite on the kernels. I'd just wipe it down with a dry rag and rub a dryer sheet on the plastic then head for the loading bench.

Sentry,
Glad we're on the same page, when you said lube, I envisioned
you dumping a quart of motor oil down the mother fucker!

Re: Prepping Powder Dispenser

The last time I bought a powder dispenser I just took a pound of powder, set the adjustment for a fairly large charge, and ran the powder though it a couple times.

Powder itself has enough "lube" in the form of graphite dust that it will do a great job of breaking in a new powder measure.

For the plastic reservoir, it doesn't hurt to wipe it down on both the inside and out with a dryer sheet to cut any static action.

This goes for even the auto dispensers as well.

every dispenser I've ever seen says to run a few hoppers full through it before use...

Neo,
Honestly, after browsing, not reading your post, I quickly labled you as a dumbass.
I viewed your link and realized you were talking DRY lube instead of CASE lube. I didn't even know they made the stuff. it should work fine!!
I'm glad you're not on MY Darwin award list anymore.
Sorry,
Miles

Re: Prepping Powder Dispenser

I dust the internals with WS2 after degreasing. Graphite works, too, but I don't have any on hand. Keeps the extremely small powders (ie. WC844) from sticking.

Re: Prepping Powder Dispenser

I sprayed mine out with starting fluid to get all the grease off of it from the factory, then I ran it. The thing throws amazingly accurate charges, even Varget I'm able to throw +/- .1 grain consistantly.
