Prescription Shooting Glasses

I currently do not wear glasses or contacts as I have 20/20 vision. Last year when I had a checkup at the Optometrist he put a couple lenses in front of my eye that allowed me to easily read one line farther down the chart from 20/20 and I could even read some from 2 lines below 20/20.

This got me thinking about having this prescription put into some safety glasses lenses to use for shooting and hunting instead of just using regular clear lenses.

Does anyone have experience with safety glasses that have a prescription in the lenses? I would like to hear recommendations and maybe what I should ask my optometrist when I go back in a few weeks.

I would like to have clear lenses and dark lenses if that is possible.

I use two different mono-vision (prescription dominant side only; clear or no lens on left side) setups to clearly see pistol front sights and fine turret readings; no problem looking thru scope and seeing reticle clearly.

For close quarter shooting on steel I use Revision Military. Their mil-spec ballistic safety rating is outstanding, you can use prescription inserts that can be changed in 30 seconds, a variety of tinting options and of course can be used without any insert.

Here’s an article to help you discuss with an optometrist prescription glass needs specific to shooters. I got mine at Lens Crafters. Be prepared for some resistance as some will want to check your vision like you are going to be using them for driving ! In that case, keep shopping there are plenty of sensible optometry centers.

I've had good luck with Rudy Project glasses. Correction in one lens, no correction in the other allows me to focus on the front sight of handguns. With a diopter adjustment, this works on scoped rifles.

My close/reading vision is getting worse with age....it happens to all of us.
I use disposable safety glasses with a bifocal lens-available on Amazon in a variety of powers. I can read the scope turrets or my wrist board clearly and quickly transition to the scope eyepiece without issues.
If you have an astigmatism, you'll need more than magnification.
I like to idea of dedicated prescription glasses but I shoot in gritty, dusty locations. Polycarbonate lenses end up scratched after a few days of shooting but they are the best material for blast protection. I'd likely trash a pair of prescription poly glasses in short order.

I use Rec Specs goggles for shooting, sports & work. For my activities they work great. Be advised that these glasses are synonymous w/ BCGs. They're available in transition lenses as well. They're very comfortable as well.

The fact you can read two lines lower on the chart at twenty feet may not matter if you don't see a clear front sight post.

I have a weak prescription but need glasses to see detail at distance, ie read a license plate or make a target clear.

I find I shoot pistol better without glasses.

No glasses I get a clear front sight, fuzzy rear and often times the target, if shooting a typical circular black bull, is a smudge.

For iron rifle sights, usually some sort of aperature/post, yeah I need my glasses but my regular prescription probably isn't ideal. I would be better with something focused at the 18-24 inches to my front sight post.

Scopes....I have a couple that are focused on the diopter for use with my glasses and some that I set the diopter without my glasses.

See if your optometrist would be willing to let you take your firearm in (made safe first, remove the bolt or firing pin) and measure an exact prescription to your front sight post.

I've got Oakley M-Frame's with clear Heater lenses, Oakley makes cuts for prescription lens inserts while maintaining and protecting peripheral. I've had them for a few years now and see some MLBers wearing them also.

I use the Rudy Project glasses too. A little speedy, but I can switch the dominant side lens out depending on whether I need to focus on the front site of a pistol or long range (2 different prescriptions).

I have 20/20 long distance vision, but now my eyes are weary from short distance and I am using prescription eye glasses.

My shooting glasses are the Oakley Tombstone, but I am having hard time to focus my pistol front sight.

How do you guys solved this problem and what are you using now?

^^^you tell your optometrist you want crystal clear vision in only your dominant eye of the front sight at the distance you hold your pistol. Tell them you don't need eye chart (Snellen) clarity at standard distance; bring your unloaded pistol or clone blue gun to the optometrist so they can make it happen. Exactly as explained 3 years ago in post #2 in this thread.

If you have 20/20 just keep wearing clear safety glasses. Wait for prescriptions until one day when you need them.

Prescription lenses are expensive. I wonder why your optometrist is trying to boost 20/20.

I had 20/10 dominate eye when I was a kid. Wait for Mother Nature to tell you when you need assistance.

Only thing I like about wearing glasses is that I don’t need to find safety glasses - they are always on. My prescription lenses save me while weed eating, sawing, grinding, shooting, etc. Split a .44 mag case once, glad I had them on.

I just dumped a ton on new prescription Oakleys. Buy ammo instead if you don’t need prescriptions.

I am a surgeon and I was waving hard time doing nose jobs and needed to change the focus to 2-3 cm deeper, so I got 0.75+ prescription lenses and everything is better now.
I went to shoot today, after 10 months hiatus. I had difficult change the focus depth and my eyes start to tear...

It was a sad day.

I highly recommend hunter’s HD gold. They will lighten and dark corresponding with light conditions.

The coating on the lenses will cause red fiber front sights, red dots to brighten up. This made me feel way more confident in shooting target focus. Also found them to brighten brass or red fiber beads on shotguns.

I have terrible nearsightedness, I use to fight dust in my contacts, then I went to glasses only having to switch between my clear lenses and sunglasses.

I can’t speak highly enough about Brian. His glasses truly increased my level of enjoyment at the range and competitiveness at matches. If they have the frames you like, he will cut lenses to fit your preferred frames, so long as the frames aren’t single lenses (eg Oakley flight jackets)

They’re set up so you can use hsa/flex accounts to purchase your prescription as well.

What style do you want?
I've had the ESS crossbow with frame insert. It was a bit bulky and awkward. The insert wasn't very stable. And with my prescription misalignment was noticeable.

Settled on Oakley Det cord with transition lenses that are clear indoors and then darken outside in sunlight. Actual safety rated.

If you don't need actual Anzi z87.1+ frame. you can get the same impact resistant polycarbonate lenses they put in the safety glasses in a non safety glass frame that you can use as everyday glasses.
I wear these 99% of the time.

I've got Oakley flak jackets, small correction for distance and bifocal for reading, also have transition lenses so they're good inside or out. You can get them from Oakley or your eye doc. Just like the rudy projects.

If I could adapt to use it, it would be simpler to use.
