Primer cratering

Very similar to the surface of the moon but with only 1 crater. You'll have a slight ridge along the outside of the primer firing pin hole.

Not exactly to much powder, like mentioned it could be a firing pin hole that is a tad to big for the firing pin. Primer flow is from the metal flowing back into the bolt body. Could be a headspace issue, soft primers or as you mentioned high pressure. I'd look for other signs of pressure like ejector marks or base enlargement of the cases.

I am by no means an expert as I'm still dealing with this issue on my AXMC, but I'm learning what can cause this issue. You can have enough primer flow to where you the piece craters enough that the piece shoots out like you pierced the primer.

It also depends on the brand if primer. Some manufacturers use a softer metal cup for the primers. I use federal premium and get a crater when I am below Max loads. Other brands using the same load do not crater. So don't use cratering as the only warning of high pressure signs. Heavy bolt lift and ejector piston scuffing should be used as well.

What brands are harder ?
Is there a list somewhere ??

I've used CCI BR2 & Federal 210M, with 210M being harder but also got lower SD

BR2 was a tad faster but would punch holes through them fairly fast.

I tried a few primers to resolve the cratering that the OP shows above.

Fed210M
CCI200
#34
WLRM

No luck! I drew this up to clarify what I see on my bolt which could be resolved if I decide to have a bushing installed.

I have been getting craters from most of my cases for a while as well. It's just lately I'm running a 6SLR & 6creed and both punch through when it gets to hot. Well our winter in south Texas was a nice freezing 78* so I don't expect anything less then 110* this summer. My factory 6creed if left in the mag in the sun will blow the primer on the 3 or 4th round and almost every other one after. At the matches it's usually hard to keep everything in a cool pouch in the shade when it's in an open field.
