I picked up large rifle magnum instead of standard by mistake. How does 308 do with magnum primers? I've used them in 22-250 before but I've not used them in 308.

Re: Primers?

You really ought to rework the load. You will probably see pressure signs if you just drop them into a warm load.

You could always trade them or just get another caliber to use them in lol.

Great excuse to buy a .338 lapua.

Re: Primers?

I wouldn't use them or rework a proven load just for primers you don't plan to use long term. Trade them or get a .338 LM.

Re: Primers?

About one grain difference. A study published in "Handloader Magazine" a couple of years ago found diminished extreme spread and a better SD using a worked up load of Varget and CCI magnum primers. For what it is worth.

Re: Primers?

I substituted some leftover CCI magnum primers for regular CCI primers in my .308 M1A service rifle loads, and noticed no appreciable difference in POI or group size. All the loads shot very well. My loads, however, are on the milder side. If they were hotter, I would be more wary about making that substitution.

Re: Primers?

I picked up 1000 of them. No worries, I've already sold half of them to a buddy. Figure its a good idea to keep at least 500 laying around.... For all kinds of reasons. Plus, I've got plenty of the standards. I just wanted to know if the magnums could be used in a pinch

Re: Primers?

I still have 2K of the Federal Match Magnum from the primer scare when Clinton 1st went into office. They shot well but I went back to a standard primer when they became available.

Re: Primers?

FWIW- CCI military primers are magnum strength according to their website. So if you were using the #34 mil primers, they should be the same. I've noticed little/no difference in my loads between std LR and the mil primers.
