Gunsmithing Prison Pink Cerakote H-141???

Has anyone used this color? I'm trying to coat a customers Glock slide and the paint doesn't seem to want to cover without going exceptionally thick. I'll call NIC on Monday but was hoping to get this done asap. I know KG Gunkote requires you to use a white base with their "pink". Any ideas???

.8 tip, 2" fan at approx 4-6" 1 1/2 turns open on the material flow and 18-20 psi at the gun. The paint should look wet as you spray but not run. If it's dry looking your getting dry spray and that’s not good. Use a ratio of 18:1, cerakote:hardener

The wet look is what your after. After the piece is coated it'll flash slightly but, it's still wet, don’t touch or bump it.

I've been doing that with an airbrush. I have an Iwata spray gun on the way with the .8 tip but I want to finish this slide this weekend. I'm just going to blast it and try it again. Thanks for the help.

Haven't used the pink ceracoat, but I did a customers kahr in pink duracoat. That required white underneath to get the right color.

On the exotic colors like Prison Pink you have to apply it thicker, about 3mils to cover properly. NIC will verify that.

Tip, fan, pressure, though all good info, isnt the issue or the solution here, you just have to go thicker on the exotic colors.

Get an Iwatta LPH80. It's a gravity gun and the best I've ever used. The airbrush is OK for small stuff but, it wont cover as easy as the LPH80 will. It's easy to get dry spray with an AB and this is the reason I hate it for cerakote.

As far as needing a thicker coat to cover, true but, all the light colors are that way, not just the exotic. I think your issue is the material flow from an AB.....not enough.

Actually, thats just not correct. Prison Pink is not a light color, nor is SIG Dark Pink or Bright Purple, etc, but all require the thicker coating to properly cover. On the other hand,lighter non-exotic colors like Desert Tan, Desert Sand, Desert Sage, etc cover with the standard one mil application.

NIC will verify what I'm saying.

Helpful hint with the exotics, bake at a lower temp so the color doesn't fade.

If you have a pep boys around u can buy one of there hvlp guns by Kawasaki works in a pinch I have 3 awaitas but do use the other on ocassion

I'll try the lower temp suggestion. I've also been using a small HVLP gun from Lowes that works ok. It works better with KG Gunkote then with Cerakote. I'm looking forward to getting the new gun. My new Skat just should up a few days ago some also looking forward to getting that set up.

Just one more option for ya . I picked up a DeVilbiss SriPro spray gun for Cerekote . Sprayed like a dream ! Had a buddy that does high end auto painting coach me on my first paint job . He has some top notch equipment and was very impressed by the SRiPro .

Use H-140 Bright White as a base coat. Put it on and flash for 20 minutes at 250 degrees, let cool and then apply the pink.
It will then cover with a lot thinner coat. Covers real easy then. It also makes the pink a lot more vibrant.

By using the Bright White as a base coat, it will make it a little easier to spray and the color will "POP" a little more. If you have Bright White in stock, then I would use it. If you don't have the Bright White in stock, I would spray the pink by it's self. It stills works fine without putting the white down as a base coat.
