I had a Remington 700 308 worked on about 6 months ago.(rebarreled, action trued, stock bedded)When I got the rifle back it shot great. I was able to keep the shots within .5 moa at 100 yards most of the time. At about 700 rounds I have started to have problems. The first 5 shots out of a cold barrel will hold .5 moa. After the first 5 shots the groups open up to about 1.5 inches at 100 yards. This has happened the last 4 times I took the rifle out. I tried match ammo,a different scope, tightened all screws, made sure there was nothing between the barrel and stock. I have the same problem with reloads and match ammo. Iam not sure what is happening, any help is appreciated.

Re: problem with accuracy

If I were you, I would give the person who built the rifle a chance to figure it out. You paid for it, and he might be able to fix it with minimal down time. Sounds like you have already looked at all the most obvious problems. I wish you luck.

Re: problem with accuracy

I have seen this same thing plague BR shooters. I wish I could find a couple of the posts and link them but I can't seem to locate them.

I would be willing to put money on the fact that your bore is carbon fouled. If you can find someone borescope, I'll bet you'll find the same thing they did.

I, like the two other posts, suggest cleaning your bore. I like a product called Wipe Out, and the pre treatment for it called "Accelerator." Another option would be a bore paste. They are mildly abrasive, so I wouldn't use them any more then every 500-750 rounds.

Re: problem with accuracy

Iam using Boretech Eliminator and it seems to do a good job of cleaning the copper and carbon. Maybe I should try something else to see if that will work. Would a shot out barrel cause this problem? I have heard that some barrels can be shot out early if the blanks were made from bad steel.

Re: problem with accuracy

its very possible that the barrel is shot out, how many rounds do you have through it? How often do you really give it a good cleaning, could be the throat is torched and needs to be set back, could be "hot" handloads.

Re: problem with accuracy

I only have 700 rounds through the barrel.I am only using 43.5 grains of Varget behind a 175 SMK. I have cleaned the barrel very well to make sure that is not the problem.I clean every 100 to 150 rounds. Maybe I need to give the throat a little more attention. Iam just wondering if a barrel with only 700 rounds on it could be shot out. Can a shot out barrel give a good first 5 round group and then spread after that?

Re: problem with accuracy

throat maintenance bullets is something i would try first.

but first a peek with a hawkeye by someone that knows what they are looking at.....

my money is on a chamber bump and re-crown.....also by someone that knows what they are doing

Re: problem with accuracy

Handloads or factory ammo? If handloads, how many firings on the brass? Isso bore paste works wonders in the throat if in fact it's a carbon issue.

How do you clean the barrel?

I get the same results with handloads and factory ammo.I have used Lapua brass with 7 firings and new Lapua brass with the same results. I use a bore guide pushing 3-4 wet patches of Boretech Eliminator through the barrel and let it sit for 5-10 min. Then I make 8-10 passes with a nylon brush soaked in Eliminator that has a looped brass end, never pulling the brush or patches back through the muzzle. After that I run 2-3 wet patches through the barrel and then finish with dry patches until they come out clean. I will also run a patch with oil down the barrel before I put it away.
