Problem with HS Precision stock install on Rem700

Hey ya'll.

Here is the current status of my build. Base rifle is a Remington 700 AAC-SD in .308. I purchased a HS Precision PST012 stock from a dude on Calguns and got ready to install it but I'm having problems. When I tighten the action screws down securely at all, the safety lever picks up some resistance and the trigger takes significantly more pressure to get it to break. It operates normally when the action screws are loose. I took the receiver off and saw where the safety bar is dragging along the aluminum of the trigger well. Probably going to file it down a bit with a steel file. Might go all the way around the trigger well until the operation is normal.

Has anyone had similar problems with a stock installation? Anything else I might do instead?

I think relieving some of the area with a file is your best bet. My HS stock was a great drop-in fit with my R700. I did not experience what you are.

Not an uncommon issue. Though most are drop-in with no issue there are plenty that need a little fitting...a little work with a Dremel tool will fix the problem.

Another area that should be looked at is the recoil lug recess. Ever so often it's not deep enough which means the action isn't sitting flush within the stock when the action screws are tightened. You can simply use the rotary tool to deepen that area, just don't cut backwards into the face of that recess.

Thanks for the advice gentlemen. Not sure what part of the action/stock is the recoil lug. Is it part of the bolt? Just would like to know where to look to see if it is deep enough to clear.

The recoil lug is the "tombstone" looking piece of metal between the action and barrel. This where the recoiling force is transferred to the stock.

Very Common problem. I had to clearance the safety on 2 HS stocks I have. I think it has something to do with the xmark trigger?

You are correct. I just got off the phone with HS Precision and the newer 700 SA rifles with the X-mark trigger have a slightly wider trigger assembly at the back by the safety than older models. So that is what is grinding. The rep said it is about 1/8" to 3/16" too narrow. That's quite a bit of material to shave off by filing, and I don't have a dremel. Good news is, he said if I pay for shipping both ways they will modify the block for free!

How did you go about fixing your aluminum block, RugerSlinger?

A Dremel tool and a few bits are relatively cheap compared to shipping it to and from HS Precision. Plus you'll have a Dremel for future projects and would have gained a little extra knowledge in the process. It doesn't require a lot of work so if you go slow I'm sure you'll be able to relieve enough of the stock to make it work.

I had this very same problem today. The trigger is slightly to large for the housing on the stock.

I used a dremel to cut out/hollow out a slot for the trigger to slide into. Only took about 10 minutes, and that included me pausing to yell at the radio during the SOTUA.

From my experience, you had to grind a bit off of the metal just forward of the notch for the bolt. Then you have to cut some of the stock material (kevlar?) to about 1/4" below the bedding block. and have it flush with the outside of the hole. Damn, wish I'd taken pictures when I was doing all this.

armueller2001- even if you decide to send the stock in, go buy a rotary tool...get the flex shaft too. They come in handy in all kinds of jobs around the house, hobbies, gunsmithing etc.

On the flex shaft- I know they seem expensive for that accessory but they are well worth it. On big jobs, not so much but on anything delicate or tight spaced...you'll want it.

I used my "Mill" AKA a drill press with a 3/8" 4 Flute mill bit and plunge cut it with it in the "table clamp" AKA wood clamps

Damn,what a coincidence!
The exact same thing happened to me today.
Rather than relieving the area in question with a dremel,would replacing the x-mark with a timney(which is what I intended to do,but later on)aleviate this problem?

I ended up just sending it in. I don't have a dremel or drill press so I figured $15 there and maybe $20 back it's not too bad a deal. Plus I know it's done right.

In my extensive google searching of the problem I think I remember reading some posts about people needing to widen out their stock recesses to accomodate a timney. Not 100% sure though..
