Hello All
I have a problem with my McMillan A5 stock, the integral thumbwheel adjustable cheecpiece was releasing from the stock and when I tightened the 2 Phillips screws attaching the mechanism to the stock it was holding for 5 or 10 rounds and then the mechanism was loose again I already destroyed the head of one of the screws and can't take it out or tighten it anymore I would appreciate any idea or solution for solving my problem.
Thanks
Gol

Re: problem with McMillan A5 adjustable cheecpiece

You should have asked sooner and I could have told you to mix up some devcon or similar and epoxy the base in place. Call McMillan and see if they have any suggestions for a solution.

Same thing happened to me and I fixed it the way RADcustom describes. Called McMillian told them of the problem and they quoted me 6 weeks to fix (this was a couple of years ago). Was so disappointed in McMillian products over this, I will never own any of their stocks again for my customs.

For all that read this, and have a McMillan stock with adjustable cheek pieces. Go ahead and do this as a PM. It's not if it will come lose, but when. The fix is simple enough, and they should just do it at the factory, but maybe they just don't know this happens a lot because we fix it ourselves.

Re: problem with McMillan A5 adjustable cheecpiece

I will E mail McMillan to help build pressure on them but since I am located in Israel I don't want to ship the stock back to the USA the paperwork will take a year and I don't want to wait, Do you think that if I will drill the screw and then try to take the shaft out it could work or I will damage the stock?
assuming I can take the screw out how should I fix this?
thanks

Re: problem with McMillan A5 adjustable cheecpiece

Just get the screw out, take out the block that was screwed down to the stock. Then rough up the bottom of the block and the stock, just to give it some bite, may not be required, but makes me feel better. Then Devcon the block back in, using the old screws to line the block up, then a little cleanup and you are done.

Re: problem with McMillan A5 adjustable cheecpiece

Gol,

My apologies for the problem with the c/p. If you do not want to send it back for us to repair, unscrew and pull out the entire box that houses the thumbwheel. Also pull out the 2 threaded inserts that the phillips screws go into. Blow out all the loose fiberglass that has broken away in the butt of the stock.

Fill the holes where the aluminum threaded inserts go with bedding material or JB weld. take the wheel housing box and tighten the phillips screws to the threaded inserts so these inserts are tight against the bottom of the box. Set the whole box with inserts into the holes you filled with epoxy. Keep the thumbwheel out and just set the cheek piece into place on top which will line everything up. Make sure to wax your phillips screws and c/p posts (the top part of the c/p hardware).

The next day remove your c/p and what we do at the shop is bed in the place the front portion of the wheel housing box. That way under recoil the box doesn't want to shift violently forward and only has the 2 little screws holding it in place.

Send me an email if you need any additional help. [email protected]

Re: problem with McMillan A5 adjustable cheecpiece

HI Ryan

Thank you for the information you sent, unfortunately it will take too long and will cost a little fortune to sheep the stock back to the US not to mention all the necessary paperwork
I will have to find a way to extract and replace the worn bolts and I will order some Devcon steel putty and will do the best I can here.
Thanks
Gol

Re: problem with McMillan A5 adjustable cheecpiece

Well I followed Ryan's instructions and bedded the inserts McMillan sent me with Devcon 10110 used some more to fill the gaps in the aluminum block's front and rear it's not the nicest job I did but works very well, I am sure it will not go anywhere again
