Problem with my new POF & Seekins build

Guys,

Last Friday I just finished putting together a new build. Its my first piston system, a POF P415 upper with a Seekins lower.

I got a chance to take it to the range for the first time this past Sunday. I loaded up a couple Magpul pmags expecting it to run like a clock, but to my surprise it wouldn't even chamber the round.

After pulling back on the charging handle and letting it fly, the bolt carrier and bolt would stop about 1" away from going into full battery.

I removed the mag, and charged it again with the same round inside, same result. After close inspection of the chamber to be free of foreign elements I tried again with the same result. After several attempts, the bolt finally closed on a few rounds. Only 1 out of every 10 rounds would chamber correctly and were fired.

I thought it might be the ammo I was using, Ultramax (factory reloads) so I tried some factory Remington 55 grain. Again, same result.

I notice one thing for certain, the extractor is chewing up brass like it was candy. Small brass "filings" are everywhere around the outside of the chamber, where the bolt locks into battery.

The bottom of the brass looks like hell.

I have not made any modifications to the upper, its brand new, straight from POF along with the BCG.

Any ideas whats happening here? Any help would be greatly appreciated. As this is frustrating as hell to put so much money and time into a build to get such a crapy result.

Re: Problem with my new POF & Seekins build

Sounds like a out of spec chamber. Make sure there is nothing in the chamber causing this, and send it back to POF.

Re: Problem with my new POF & Seekins build

Examine the Brass.
Where are the shavings coming from?
Face of the case, rim of the case, or inside the chamber?

If it is the face of the case, check the ejector to make sure that it is clear and functioning properly.

If it is the rim of the case, check the extractor to make sure that it is able to move freely.

If it is the coming from anywhere else, sounds like the chamber is out of the 5.56 NATO spec.

Good Luck...

Re: Problem with my new POF & Seekins build

I would concur that it is your chamber out of spec. If they somehow did manage to fire it at the factory you need to ask them what ammo they are shooting.

I would box it back up and send it to POF with a description of whats wrong with it. Don't monkey with it yourself, you could void your warranty.

Re: Problem with my new POF & Seekins build

did you try a different mag other than Pmag? I have a couple pmags that wont run in any ar's we have (factory or billet). the feed lips on the mag are real tall and the bolt drags on them. A quick file across the top of the plastic feed lips and they ran perfect. Might be worth a try?

Doesn't solve the extractor issue, but you could take your extractor off and see if they chamber. Polish the extractor while you are at it. I suggest making up a couple dummy rounds

Re: Problem with my new POF & Seekins build

Glen, thanks for the tips. When I get home later I will remove the extractor and do some testing without it.

The gun looks fantastic with your lower by the way. I'll take some pictures in a little while and post'em

Re: Problem with my new POF & Seekins build

I was pretty busy last night helping a friend move so I haven't had a chance to do some testing, but I did grab my camera and snap a few quick pics to share.

The last one is where the bolt stops when attempting to chamber a round.

The other pics are just for fun. As you can see, I painted the rollmarks as well. Very happy with the way they came out.

I'll keep you guys posted to what I find out.

Re: Problem with my new POF & Seekins build

Try some different mags!! I have 4 POF rifles with a few different uppers for each and I have spent a bunch of time with the guys at POF and from what i have been told 90% of the time the issue is with the magazines the owner is using!!

They test fire every rifle before it leaves the shop.

So the only difference between that gun leaving the shop and getting to you is the magazines.

I run nothing but magpul magazines and i havent ahd any issues at all. but as Glen has said try new mags and or run the sand paper over the top some and see if that fixes the issue!!

My rifles are hell on brass as well but they all run like a clock!!

good luck!

Re: Problem with my new POF & Seekins build

Thanks Gentlemen

Really appreciate all the comments and feedback. Its great having a community like this to ask questions too.

I will borrow a couple mags from a buddy and see if thats it as well. All I have are Pmags and I have heard that they are easy to sand if needed.

Tomorrow I will let you know what I discover.

Thanks again guys.

What did you use to fill in your rollmarks? I also have a seekins lower and love it.

Re: Problem with my new POF & Seekins build

I would be willing to bet that it is a bound extractor.
If there is one of those enhanced reliability O rings under the extractor it may be binding against the bolt.
This should be fairly easy to identify and can be diagnosed by removing the O ring.
The Extractor will function without it and if the symptom goes away you have found your problem.

Re: Problem with my new POF & Seekins build

I appreciate everyone trying to help out, but some comments are way off base.

Call me at POF and I'll walk you through a few things, if there is a problem with the bolt/extractor or anything else, we'll take 100% care of you.

Re: Problem with my new POF & Seekins build

I think I owe this post an update.

I sent my upper back to POF. The only out of my pocket expense was shipping it to them. They took care of the rest.

POF's customer service is nothing short of incredible. Turn-around time was less than 24 hours, they replaced my bolt, polished the feedramps, and even upgraded my roller cam pin, all free of charge.

By the look of dirty bolt, they tested it for proper function.

I haven't tested it yet myself, but IF there is still a problem, it wont be with the upper. A big THANK YOU to the fellas over at POF for their support service.
