Re: Problem with new Shilen barrel.

who head spaced? i head spaced on too tight one time and go a small bump but nothing like that. FYI i used the sized brass method I will use head space gauge from here on

Re: Problem with new Shilen barrel.

I will try to get a better picture, but the ring is around the should and it is indented INTO the brass. I just checked the headspace and it is between 3 and 6 thousandths. Could be shorter, but is by no means dangerous or problem causing. I think it will be going to Shilen shortly.

Re: Problem with new Shilen barrel.

Just got off the phone with Wade at Shilen. I am going to send them the barreled action with two pieces of fired brass. They are going to find out the problem and fix it as soon as possible, as well as re-install and head space it. Talk about customer service.

They'll just set the barrel back enough to clean up the chamber and you'll get it back a little shorter. I'd ask them how much over "go" they will be headspacing it though.

Re: Problem with new Shilen barrel.

Yea, I would like it to be at 1 thousandth like all the builders use. But I just shipped it, 26 bucks out of my pocket=ouch. Shipping is getting outrageous. Since they are going to without a doubt rechamber, do you think they would make it an AI chamber for no additional charge?

Should they have noticed this problem when they test fired this gun as part of the barrel installation?

Maybe the better question is...

Do most places test fire a brand new barrel that they install and return example brass to the customer?

I've yet to see anything here that says Shilen actually installed the barrel, but maybe my eyes are getting bad. Of course they did chamber the barrel. I will be very interested to see the outcome here.

Re: Problem with new Shilen barrel.

There was no problem with the Shilen barrel. Just a simple goof up with the barrel and the gunsmith. Everyone involved is seeing this right and my rifle should be ready very soon. Great customer service from all parties, including the builder and Shilen.

Re: Problem with new Shilen barrel.

SAAMI changed the specs on the 6.5 x 55 Swede in '95 or '97(?). The "current" SAAMI manual was printed in '92. You have to call and ask for new prints. Shilen probably had an old reamer and the OP is using new production brass. Same thing happened to me 5-6 years ago.

How do you change the specifications on something that has been in use for a hundred years? Did they think no one would notice? Shouldn't there be a version number on the changed cartridge? Or am I missing something?

Re: Problem with new Shilen barrel.

I know there is a differance from Euro cases and US cases. It is in the web area. The US version is .470 while the Euro version is slightly larger. This is why you get the buldge on the case at the web. Add to that Winchester brass is even smaller.

I don't believe it was a change in the prints that caused this. The brass will fire form to what the chamber is. People do Ackleys all the time an dont report a ring like this when they fir form brass. That chamber was f-ed up an some one is covering up their mess up.

Re: Problem with new Shilen barrel.

The mix up came when I originally opted for a McGowan barrel and then we switched to a Shilen. The smith accidently ordered the McGowan. But he is making it right, I am having a Shilen built soon with a brand new PTG reamer. Shilen has treated me well and so has the gunsmith. This build has been fighting me for the last 15 months, but the end is near. Also, Shilen does not adhere to the SAAMI spec 6.5x55, they have throated theres so you can easily reach the lands with the 140 class bullets.
