OK, so basically I'm rebuilding my Savage FP 10. I replaced my Leupold Vari X II Tactical with a MK IV. I used an EGW 25 MOA base and Leupold MK IV medium (the lowest available in the MK IV line) rings. I have a B&C stock on the way to replace my old SSS stock. Anyway, here's the problem- I like my scope as close as possible to the bore. I was very disappointed when I set this configuration up to see that the scope was sitting quite high. This setup would be great if I was planning on parking my truck underneath my scope, but I'm not. I suspect the EGW 25 MOA base may be the problem. Would a Seekins 20 or 30 MOA base sit lower and fix my problem? I'd like to be a MINIMUM of 1/4" closer to the barrel. With all that being said, I get a real good cheek weld and sight picture through the scope as it is. I have yet to shoot it though. Just snapping at stuff out my window it seems great though. Also, when I boresighted it, the windage was dead nuts on perfect and all I had to do was crank my elevation down due to the tapered base. Man, I don't know what to do. Part of me says shoot it first, then decide, part of me says replace the base before I send a bunch of fancy handloads downrange. What do you gents think?

Shoot it and see how you like it after you put some rds downrange. If the rifle feels good and you get a good check weld leave it like it is. Having the scope a little higher off the bbl ain't going to change how the rifle shoots. Try it & see how you like it.

Yeah, I never like to be more than a few inches from a bottle of tequila. I used to have 2 of those but gave 1 to a friend.

Thanks very much for the advice guys, I was kinda leaning toward shooting it first. I'll give a range report and some target pics after I shoot it Saturday.

Re: Problems, problems. New scope.

I have a warne 20 base and they definitely sit lower then the EGW. the EGW rings and bases are known to be some of the taller ones out there.

Re: Problems, problems. New scope.

True, I forgot about that. My problem is that even with the hs presision stock mine came with the cheek weld is a little low for me. So when my USO comes in I'm gonne have a set of badger low mount rings to get It even lower. It should do the trick

If you have a good, comfortable cheek weld and scope image, going lower is probably only going to mess that up.

Learn to live with the looks, and don't mess with success. Learn to know when you're better off.

If you absolutely must have the gap smaller, wrap some back foam around the scope bell... if you extend it forward, you have a custom scope shade.

Agree 100% Not to rip on the OP because you have to be happy with your rifle, and we spend the money we do to have them the way we want them....BUT....I see too many guys on here that are more concerned with HOW the rifle looks over everything else....Me personally...I couldnt care less what the thing looked like (unless its pink or something) as long as the rifle is mechanically and ergonomically up to my standards, thats all that matters.....why....because....whats more important....function or looks...and thats why Im always looking for parts that are beat to shit...if they are still mechanically sound, Perfect! Ive been meaning to build an "Ugly Stick" ...something I dont care if it gets knocked over into the mud....a rifle I could throw into a case and TOSS into the back of the truck....I really wonder HOW much abuse a rifle can take when you are purposely rough with them.......sorry thinking out loud and got side tracked...

You can infer from the above that is what he was talking about...besides he said it was perfectly lined up for him the way it is....that doesnt leave you believing he wants to change it because it isnt ergonomically working for him.....

Re: Problems, problems. New scope.

Shoot it if you get a good cheekweld. I put on a Varible Gantry mount on my LTR. I had to build up the HS stock with foam and tape to get the cheekweld I wanted. It shoots great even with the scope up high above boreline.

No, I can't infer anything, he stated he wanted a scope lower to the bore and that the parts he ordered, upon seeing the scope mounted, did not accomplish the goal. Maybe it works and maybe it doesn't but I don't read where the issue is about "looks".

Re: Problems, problems. New scope.

Leupold Mark 4 rings
Med .84"
Seekins
Lowest start at .82" (diff. of less than thickness of human hair)
Badger
Lowest start at .823"
Ring change will not help. I do not believe a base change will help much as a 20 MOA base or any XX MOA base is closer to the barrel in the front than back. You can go up to a higher XX MOA base but your cheek weld may become a "chin weld"....
Ergonomics more important than Aesthetics...
