Problems with 22-250 RCBS Resizing Dies

I'm on my second set of resizing dies (full length) in a month for my Savage 22-250. The first die was slightly crushing the neck mouth after resizing. I left an indentation on the top of the mouth. I returned the die for another set. This set is completely crushing the case neck on the upstroke and is scoring a deep scratch in the brass. Is anyone having problems with these dies (bad batch). I cannot think of anything else that could be causing this other than manufacturing defects. I set the dies to my shell holder in the up position and turn down a 1/4 turn to remove slack (per the instruction manual).

That sounds pretty bad. Have you called RCBS customer service to see if they can help?

Until then, have you tried resizing a case with the die backed out a turn or two? Just to see if the neck still gets messed up.

Are you checking the case length? Could that new Savage of yours be stretching them? Sounds strange . I'd pull the decap rod ass. out, do a "flashlight inspection" and try sizing one, after I measured a case, for length, with the ass. out of the die.. . The more I think about it, I'd focus on the Decap assembly . I'll be watching this thread, as I'm getting ready to buy a 22-250, in Savage, and the reloading stuff.

I don't use the RCBS instructions for setting up dies. Use your chamber as a gauge, adjust the die to resize just enough to fit easily, no more. Like others have said, check for long cases and your decap rod. Odds are good that you didn't get two bad sets from RCBS. Adjust your decap rod to just push a primer out, no more.

Well, I started to unscrew the de-capping pin from the die and noticed the pin was not turning uniformly. It is bent. This is why it scoring and bending the brass. The pin is not aligned with the case mouth. I think RCBS had a bad batch of dies. This would cause the case damage from the first die I had. I'm going to return it and get another brand.

Decapping rod can be screwed in too far. That's how it gets bent.

I'd be willing to bet that how it got bent as well. I have used RCBS 22-250 dies for a long time never had a problem. However I do not adjust the dies as the die makers suggest. I after lubing I smoke the case and screw the die down until it's about 1/4" over the shell holder. Then insert the case to see how far into the die the case goes. Then continues the process until the die just reaches the shoulder neck intersection resmoking as required. Then I know it is resizing it to the proper length and not bumping the shoulder back any more than needed.

Well, I feel like a dumb** now. My shell holder was not completely inserted so the cases were not going into the die properly aligned. This is what was causing the scoring and crushing of the case. I snapped in the shell holder all the way and everything seems OK. I did get some good tips in your replies though. Lessoned learned: always check and re-check your equipment.

I'm on my 23? batch of 100, in a marathon reloading binge... checking loads with a flashlight...sure enough... found an uncharged case. I've been loading for 30 yrs. Happens to all of us.
