Problems with LNL AP resizing .223

I'm having a problem with full length resizing .223 on my Hornady LNL AP and my Classic single stage presses.

The problem I have is head space. When I adjust the die down to touch the shell plate or shell holder the head space get longer not shorter. I read some where that this is problem and adjust down 1/8 to 1/4 turn more to solve the problem or machine .10 to .15 off the surface. I tried adjusting down and it worked. But I don't think forcing down is good for my press.

Has anyone else had this problem? Do I send to Hornady? Sell my stuff and go back to Bowling.

I've had to take a little off the bottom of a couple of dies for just that reason. I like using a case gauge to make sure everything is good since my .223 ammo goes in several rifles. I use a set of calipers to measure the die and then take material off using a belt sander a little at a time. Some .223 brass doesn't gauge due to damaged rims, so try sizing several pieces before moving on.

I took .025" off the bottom of my die, but i inly needed to remove .007". I removed extra to ensure the case didn't come in contact/flex the shell plate.

before woking on the dies, you can try to lower the upper face of some cheaper shellholder_
place a sheet of oiled sanding paper flat on a glass surface_
rub, w. rotating motion in both senses, the upper face of your s/h. on it, until needed_

The LNL AP does not hit the top face of the shell plate; it's makes contact in the recess.

I have about a dozen die sets that all get used on a lnl ap, and none are modified. Hornady, rcbs dies. Curious as to what dies you all are modifying.

RCBS dies.

I spoke with a Hornady tech I he stated this does occur. He also stated Hornady would modify the the dies free of charge if I wasn't capable.

One thing I know is if its manufactured there are always deviations.
