Sidearms & Scatterguns Problems with USP 45 recoil spring assembly?

Hey all, I was looking at a USP full size 45 and the guy who is selling it has an extra recoil spring assembly for it as a backup. My question is, is there any reason not to sell that assembly if I pick up the pistol? The gun is barely used and I've never heard of that assembly going bad on a USP before, and that part can gather a pretty penny (as just about all HK parts do). What say you, is there any real good reason to keep it?

A spring is a wearable part. It is "going bad" every time the slide cycles, just like any other spring. Springs wear from being cycled. The recoil spring is essential to reliable feeding and should be replaced on a fairly regular basis for any pistol.

Some people just like to have backups for all parts. In all likelihood you will never need it. It's up to you if you want to keep it.

I understand the spring going bad, but the entire assembly? That just doesn't make sense to me. The springs aren't too expensive, but if you get the entire assembly new it costs about 97 bucks.

Well, you're right! I have a USP and have not only an extra recoil assembly but extra barrel and they're probably just a waste of cash because I'll probably never wear either out. A replacement recoil spring from wolf is just a few bucks (when/if you ever need one) and the probablity of damaging/wearing out the guide rod is nil. In fact, it will probably outlast the slide, barrel, and frame and several thousand rounds of ammo. Of course, as soon as you sell it........you'll need it!

Yeah, I think I'm going to take that chance though... I could really use the cash. Let's hope that this isn't one of those really weird cases where I will need one! I suppose if that day comes, I won't feel that bad about re-buying one.

Hmm, that's an interesting point. Anyone here with a USP that could clarify if the guide rod is metal or plastic? The guide rod on my sig is metal, so I just assumed...

Not sure if they changed the assembly along the way, but my early model is definately not plastic. It has a rectangular lug that engages into the lug on the bottom of the barrel and has two recoil springs, a long and a short. I have thousands of rounds through mine without any issues.

How early is yours skibum? The one I am looking at is a 2002 model.

It's metal.................factory Glock is plastic.

Thanks for the confirmation, glock was the only pistol I knew of that used a plastic guide rod.
