Hunting & Fishing projectile opinion for 300WM for elk

I finally drew a damn hunt...

(sometimes it seems like you'd have better luck at the Lotto)

I built a 300 WM just for this...

I have some 168 gr Barnes TSX's
and some Nosler 180 gr Accubonds...

Just looking for opinions on bullet performance from people who have ACTUALLY used them....

If this has been beat to death, I apologize, a search didn't turn up much.... I know the Barnes are accurate, as I have shot them in my 308, and I have heard from people I respect that the Noslers are accurate as well....

I am primarily looking for insight on performance in the animal...

I have knocked the crap out of everything I have hit with a Accubond, from 7mm 140's to .375 260's. From point blank to 560 yards and the bullet has performed flawlessly.

+1 for the accubond....this is the result of a 180 accubond out of a 30/06. A one shot kill at about 100 yards or so. Dont forget the Swift Scirocco. A very good bonded bullet also. Hornady interbond is another good one.

my partner shot a bull in wy in 07 with the 200 gr accubond out of a 300RUM. the load was hot and it totally destroyed both shoulders before coming to rest under the skin on the opposite side. end result bullet was 127grs and got about 7 lbs of meat from both shoulder elk still went 17 yards before going down. my father has shot 4 elk with the accubond and 3 with partitions great bullet

I killed my bull last year with a 225gr TSX out of my 338 win mag. It was a frontal shot at 239 yards. The bull never took another step. I recovered the bullet in the skin at the back of the stomach, and it looked just like the ones in the barnes magazine adds. Great bullet in my opinion.

One of my Iowa hunters with a cow elk killed at 508 yards with a 180 Swift Scirocco .300 WM. Recovered the bullet under hide on the off side...still 150grs. Entry on the left side behind the shoulder, broke the right front shoulder. Mature cow. You can see the entry just left of the power ring on the scope.

Out of the two you have listed I would go with the Accubonds...

PGS is dead on with the Sciroccos... I shoot the 180's and they are an absolute fuckin' hammer...

Thanks for the heads up gents.... going to run the accubonds...
one last question...

I have a ton of 180 SMK's
I am considering getting comfortable with the rifle (and the reloading and holdover dope) with the SMK's, then switch to the accubonds, as they should be close...
does this seem reasonable?

Shoot what you practice with, If its acurate, use it. See anything about hunting with SMK's for EVERYONES opinion on that.

I'm getting ready for my very first elk hunt & I'm using my .300 Win Mag.

I've been shooting the 180 grain Nosler Partitions. Accuracy is good but not outstanding, but I know that the Partiton has killed alot of elk in its day!!

I worked up loads that run very close for the 200AB and 200SMK, and do the bulk of my shooting with the SMK but hunt with the AB. Worked well for me, 6X6 at 683yds last year.

Can't speak for the partitions,but all I shoot in mine is 190 SMK,and 180 Accubond,if I happen to be dialed in with the SMK come hunting season,I will use it.Trying to finish my RE-build in 4 weeks,it will be close.

This big 6X6 was killed with a 180gr. partition out of a .300 Weatherby Magnum...under 200 yards. One shot through the shoulders.

Barnes tripple shock is an excelent choice. shot an elk at a hair over 500yds with a 6.5 Creedmoor 120gr tripple shock on top of 44.5gr of h4350. btw forgot to mention it dropped like a rock when the bullet hit

i used a 275 gr SWAF in my 338 RUM last year in preparation of a long shot and my elk ended up in my lap at 15 yards, it ran 10 feet....for 300 WM the 180 gr TSX tipped would be cool, imo...also, the Trophy Bonded Baer Claw Tipped would be cool too for a bonded bullet...

This is exactly what I do, for the 300 WSM. My friends and I have had phenomenal success with the 200 Accubond/300 WSM combination. Very accurate, and very reliable. However at over $.50 per bullet, it is just very expensive to get the practice and range time you need. That is why I use the SMK at the range mostly.

All I shoot from my 300 WM is TSX and MRX, very very good terminal performance out to 400 yards. I normally do not shoot larger game ( more than pigs ) out past 400. 180 grain Fed Premiums are hard to beat.

It's not going to matter what you shoot out of a .300 WM as long as you have good shot placement and that will have to do with you shooting your rifle as much as you can and overcoming your heart beating out of your chest when you get ready to shoot.

The 180gr Accubond and Ballistic tip have the same BC,the BT is a little cheaper to practice with,I don't know if they have the BT in 200gr.
