I know alot of it is personal preference, but how do you precision guys like to clean rifle barrels? number of rounds in between cleaning, particular solvents, steps, etc?

i've just heard so many different ways.

That's funny; I don't care who you are!

Re: Proper barrel cleaning?

After your search you will find so many varying opinions, all of which seem sound that you will actually be more confused than you are now. Sorry and welcome to internet forums!

Re: Proper barrel cleaning?

Well the simple answer is, its always a good idea to follow a SHORT "break in" procedure.

1 Shot Then Clean (x5)
3 Shots Then Clean (x1)
5 Shots Then Clean (x1)

Then just clean it when you're done.

According to whom?</div></div>

According to me. No barrel comes from the factory fully 100% devoid of imperfections. So if I spend a few rounds cleaning those up, I see no harm in it. The key is to not go overboard.

Re: Proper barrel cleaning?

I suppose I should follow this up. The purpose of my short procedure is not thinking it makes the barrel shoot better or anything of the sort. But because after a few rounds the amount of fouling drops off pretty significantly. I'd rather not let it build up in the barrel while I'm doing so.

HaHaHa... That's funny. Here's the flaw in your thinking: What makes you think that firing a "few rounds" with cleaning in between is going to clean up imperfections. Last time I checked Steel was tougher than Copper. On a new Factory barrel, if the accuracy is affected by imperfections in the barrel, throw that barrel away and start over. On a new Custom Barrel, if the accuracy is affected by imperfections in the barrel, call the Barrel Maker and hand him his ASS for selling you a piece if shit and have him replace it for free. A little copper in the bore is GOOD. Don't clean it all back out.

Re: Proper barrel cleaning?

Here we go again. See what you did BlakeJ? (LOL) Welcome to the forum, and FWIW...you will NEVER find a consensus on this topic in past posts, so read them all, then do what makes you happy!

This man speaks the truth, Butches Bore Shine is the best cleaner out there. Shoot till groups start to widen, for me its about every 180 - 200 rds with a TRG22

Re: Proper barrel cleaning?

I also clean my TRG 22 after 100-200 rounds. At that point accuracy still hasn't changed. I do clean the action, bolt face and lube th rear of the lugs after each outing.

OK, now that is about to show up in a ton of threads, that is F-in funny

Re: Proper barrel cleaning?

A copper free bore shoots the best.If you are happy with 1"groups at 100yds let the copper build up.More guns are ruined by improper cleaning than shooting.Learn how to clean the right way and always use a bore guide.
