Keep getting emails with name, address, pdf attachment. I knew it was a scam, but googled it and it’s real wide spread the last few weeks. I didn’t open the PDF obviously, but a bunch of folks did and said it was screen shots off google maps of their address and it said they were recorded blah blah blah, pay a couple grand in Bitcoin or I’ll send your nudes to your contacts.

Tell your old/stupid friends and family to delete it and move on with the day

I basically never get these and I have over a half dozen email accounts I keep track of daily.

You guys need to stop putting your email into places it don't belong.
I don’t, it was a giant data breach. Also they usually go to spam and don’t get seen. I don’t use company apps or anything I buy shit, that’s it.

My email has none of the info I was given attached to it.

Data breach I can understand but thats not the reason you end up on mailing lists. It's vastly more common to get on a mailing list because you throw your personal email into any box that asks for it. It's why Apple, Mozilla and others are now offering email forwarding when stuff asks you for your email. Makes your actual address less public and easily sold by whoever has the list (generally companies).

That said, even with data breaches involved with several of my emails I only ever seem to get spam on my gmail. Part of why I hate gmail.

I don’t do any of that Im not a moron. I was involved in a data breach now I got a scam email, that’s how it works

We can go around in circles all day, but I refuse to give my info out to anyone unless it’s required(shipping info making purchases). I’ll walk out of places acting like they need my info and not taking no for an answer.

You're acting like I'm personally attacking you. I'm not. Relax.

In your case it's probably the data breach. For most, it isn't and historically most certainly hasn't been.

I’m not acting like anything I said what was the likely issue, and you said I’m passing my info around.

I said I’m not and arguing is pointless

Hey, don't judge. You need an e-mail address to register as a PornHub platinum executive tier-one 100-Club supporter!

Reminds me, I probably should become a supporter here. I mean, the MPT is at least as good as SnapChat, right?

    Sirhr

Who pays for porn? It’s free, even would find discarded porn in the woods in the stone age before internet porn

I’m mostly just sad someone isn’t watching me jack off
Ohh bullshit. No one is falling for your pity party. We know that you are spamming your spank videos. My mother told me that she thought my brother, (also named Mike) , had gotten a new email account and when she opened an email expecting a video of his children playing on their new swing set. It was a video of you spanking off.
BTW she said that the panda outfit looks good on you.

Tell her I miss her, and that tongue thing she does.

A couple of years ago, near Christmas, I was buying a Stanley thermos for my nephew. New job and outside. The store was super crowded, long line at the checkout. The clerk wanted my name and address and email. I said I was paying cash and they didn't need any of that. Oh...it's for the warranty. I said, yeah, Stanley will take care of it, I am paying cash, you don't need my info. So the little gal tells me she can't sell it without filling out all the boxes. I look around the room and say, ok....My email is [email protected], (a few snickers) my address is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC and I made up some zip code (a few more and some real big grins) Then I told her my name was John, that's J O H N. She was busy typing every thing in and asked my last name. I said would you like my middle initial? yes sir. It's E. And your last name? Cash. That's C A S H. John E Cash. That's when she realized what was going on and got really pissed off. She needed the real info. I asked to see her manager and I'd wait right here in line. Then I insisted on seeing her manager and no, I'm not moving aside, I will wait my place right here in the front of the line. Dude shows up. She starts talking to him, she is still pissed, and he is taking it all in, looking around, other customers and other clerks. He steps over, rings up my thermos and apologizes. He is telling her that all that info is NOT required and to just ring stuff up and accept payment. I thanked him, and her, and wished everyone a very merry Christmas. I got a couple of "you, too".

That morning they probably had a meeting where the same manager told her she has to get everyone’s info or else she will be fired because corporate wants it.

I managed a retail store once, that’s seriously how it is.

It’s 100% how it is. Those credit cards they offer, you get in trouble because people don’t want them. You have to persuade people to get them to keep your job. It’s always some new scam
I know I have been fortunate enough in my life to have only worked retail for a couple of months while I was still in High School. That was long before cell phones, email and the prevalence of credit cards. My duties were custodial and maintenance in nature but I can definitely see how all that crap goes on. I did and do feel for the clerks and others in those low paying positions but at the same time, I respect my own self much more than I feel sorry for them.
Similar thing happened just a few months ago. Mac Tool truck was at a local shop. I needed a few things and stepped in. I asked about the tools, he had them, I go to pay...cash...and he asks my name and such for the receipt. I want the warranty so I give him name, address, phone number but not my email. Then he asks for my SSN. I looked at him for a very long time and he just looked back. I could see he wasn't getting the vibe so I ask him "why in the FUCK do you need a SSN for a FUCKING ratchet and some other shit?" He was taken aback by the aggressive stance, tone and choice of words. Before he could formulate a reply, I said, "I'll just go ahead and catch the FUCKING SnapOn guy. Thanks, man. Hope the rest of your day gets better." and headed out of the truck. He wanted to me to reconsider and I turned and looked at him again but he just looked at me again with that same blank, nothing going on upstairs look. I told him to delete my info and walked away.
SnapOn guy...no issues. took my cash, gave me a receipt and my tools.
I do NOT feel one bit for the Mac guy. That's HIS franchise that he paid for.

Most of "us" just go along and give away any and all information requested. WE freely and willingly give up our freedom and any expectation of privacy by posting every move on some internet app.

And not putting tape over the webcam.

I use a semi transparent tape so it’s like OG cable porn “oh was that a nipple?”

I win an incredible amount of stuff every week from all kinds of big chain stores and companies.
Also, I have a insane amount of last notices for cancellation to businesses. I don't have accounts with!
Apparently I have issues in europe too. Some of the stuff in my junk file is in German and Italian.
I just delete it without ever opening any of it. The volume of these scam emails goes up and down .
It has definitely been on the increase lately!

Then he asks for my SSN.
not sure why folks ask for info they cannot confirm or verify. i always give a defunct phone number and if i really HAVE to provide a SSN, i'll just make one up. same with my birth day. we all know everyone gets hacked and i'm not going to give you sensitive information that will end up causing me a hassle later at best or some sort of financial stress or loss at worst.

regarding the toolman, prob wanted to prequal you for a line of credit for which he probably gets some $$$.

    Reactions: Aftermath
So I was checking an old email account I no longer use and did find one of these data leak scam emails.

Multiple paragraphs of supposedly knowing where I was (address wrong) and what I had been doing on porno sites and my "camera" (don't have a webcam and barely ever use laptops).

Hell he even attached a picture of my "house". Not the right place for said address. Even called it a "nice neighborhood".... No it isn't.

Entertaining if not pathetic. This category of scam used to be called Social Engineering on a couple of sites I used to be on. Basically you would use every tiny piece of info you could get on someone to attempt to scam money out of them somehow and try to make them paranoid to do it. Always good for a chuckle if you're a level headed individual.

The concerning thing to me always was how many people fall for this stuff.
